Andy Phillips

8/9/2005

To provide more backup support for the left side of their infield, the New York Yankees recalled Felix Escalona and optioned Phillips to Triple-A Columbus. Phillips was 6-for-36 (.167) with six runs scored in 16 games with New York. He has fanned 11 times.

On Tuesday, the New York Yankees placed Ruben Sierra on the 15-day disabled list and recalled Phillips to take his spot on the 25-man roster. This is the fourth time the infielder has been summoned from Triple-A Columbus, where he was batting .313 with 18 homers, 46 RBI and 46 runs scored in 55 games. In 14 games with the Yankees, he is 5-for-32 (.156) with four doubles, a homer and six runs scored.

Phillips returned to Triple-A Columbus less than 24 hours after joining the New York Yankees. The infielder was optioned back to Columbus Thursday to make room for Bubba Crosby, who is needed as insurance in the outfield since Hideki Matsui is limited to DH duties because of a recent ankle injury.

For the third time this season, Phillips was recalled from Triple-A Columbus Wednesday, this time to replace injured middle infielder Rey Sanchez. Phillips was hitting .337 with nine home runs and 22 RBI in 25 games for Columbus. With the Yankees, he's gone 5-for-32 (.156) with four doubles and a homer.

Phillips will be making his second stint with the New York Yankees this season, as he has been recalled from Triple-A Columbus. The infielder fills the roster spot of designated hitter Ruben Sierra, who landed on the 15-day disabled list on Thursday, due to a right biceps injury. Phillips appeared in just two games with the Yanks earlier this month, but did not record an at-bat.

Phillips will be the Yankees' last option off the bench, so he has no fantasy value at this point. He was batting .429 with the minor league club.

Phillips, who was recalled by the Yankees near the start of the season when Kevin Brown went on the disabled list, was returned to Triple-A Columbus Sunday. He was sent down to make room for Brown, who made his 2005 debut in a losing effort against Baltimore.

Phillips, who enjoyed a solid spring training in Florida, appeared in two games but didn't get a plate appearance during his two-week stay.

Phillips has been recalled from Triple-A Columbus by the New York Yankees, filling the roster spot of veteran righthander Kevin Brown, who will miss at least a couple of weeks with a stiff lower back. In 24 exhibition games this spring, Phillips hit .333 with four home runs, 13 RBI and a stolen base.

Phillips has no fantasy value at this point, as he will see limited action as a backup infielder for the Yankees.
