Ruben Gotay

8/6/2005

Gotay was sent down to Double-A Wichita by the Kansas City Royals on Saturday. The opening day second baseman for the Royals, Gotay is in a 2-for-28 slump that has dropped his batting average to .227.

Gotay's starting second-base job could be at risk. The 22-year-old infielder is batting .240 with a .301 on-base percentage, and since the start of July, he's hitting .188 with no hitting percentage near .300 in 14 games. On Wednesday, the Royals recalled second-base prospect Donnie Murphy to replace Tony Graffanino following Tuesday's trade with Boston. Murphy started in place of Gotay on Wednesday, and the rookie singled and homered in a 5-3 Kansas City win.
