On Tuesday, the Boston Red Sox recalled righthander Manny Delcarmen from Triple-A Pawtucket and optioned Alvarez to the same affiliate. The lefthanded Alvarez made his major league debut on Sunday, working a scoreless frame against Detroit. On Monday, Tampa Bay roughed up the 22-year-old southpaw for six hits and four runs in one inning.

For the second time in his career, Alvarez was recalled by the Boston Red Sox for only a day. On Sunday, the Red Sox returned the 22-year-old lefthander to Triple-A Pawtucket without pitching in a game. He was brought up on Saturday.

The Red Sox recalled Alvarez from Triple-A Pawtucket before Saturday's game. He will take the roster spot of Matt Mantei, who has gone on the 15-day disabled list with an ankle injury. Alvarez, who is expected to work out of the bullpen for Boston, has gone 7-3 with a 4.23 ERA in 16 starts with Pawtucket this season.
