George Sherrill

5/4/2006

Seattle manager Mike Hargrove said he will go with a closer-by-committee after Eddie Guardado blew his third save in his last six outings Wednesday night. Sherrill, who is 0-1 with a save and a 3.24 ERA in 15 games, has allowed just one run in his last 11 appearances -- a span of six innings in which the left-hander has fanned eight.

In a move to cover for a thin bullpen, Sherrill was recalled on Monday and worked one-third of an inning in Seattle's loss to New York on Monday night. After the game, Sherrill was returned to Triple-A Tacoma and righthander Jorge Campillo was recalled.

The move was necessary after Jamie Moyer, Joel Pineiro and Aaron Sele had a series of poor starts and the bullpen started to wilt under the heavy workload. The bullpen also is losing Julio Mateo, who is scheduled to start Tuesday night in place of demoted righthander Joel Pineiro.
