Joey Gathright

7/3/2005

The Tampa Bay Devil Rays placed infielder Alex Gonzalez on the 15-day disabled list with a neck injury and recalled Gathright from Triple-A Durham on Sunday. At Durham, the speedy outfielder was batting .305 with a .388 on-base percentage, 31 steals and 46 runs scored in 58 games.

As expected, Gathright has been optioned to Triple-A Durham by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, opening a spot on the roster for fellow outfielder Alex Sanchez, who has rejoined the club after serving a 10-day suspension for violating the league's new drug policy. The 23-year-old Gathright was solid in Sanchez' absence, hitting .350 with a double, triple and three stolen bases in six games.

The Devil Rays want Gathright to get at-bats on a daily basis, and Durham is the best place for that to happen. Expect him to be back with the big league club later this season.

Gathright will force the Devil Rays to make a difficult decision. Alex Sanchez is due back from his steroid-related suspension on Thursday, and only one of them can start for Tampa Bay. In five games for the Rays, the speedy rookie has batted .438 (7-for-16) with a double, triple and three stolen bases. He's reached base in nine of 19 plate appearances.

As a 23-year-old prospect, Gathright will go where he can play every day. That will be Tampa Bay only if the Rays are ready to make Sanchez a fourth outfielder. It seems like an obvious decision, but we'll have to wait and see what manager Lou Piniella decides.

Gathright has been recalled from Triple-A Durham by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, filling the roster spot of Alex Sanchez, who was suspended for 10 days for violating the league's new drug policy. Chris Singleton is slated to start in center during Sanchez' absence, with Gathright handling the primary backup duties.

The speedy Gathright batted .326 with a .384 OBP and 33 stolen bases with Durham last year. He also appeared in 19 games with the Rays, hitting .250 with six stolen bases in 52 at-bats.
