Elizardo Ramirez

4/24/2006

The Cincinnati Reds have recalled Ramirez from their Triple-A Louisville affiliate to start Monday against the Washington Nationals, according to the Reds' Web site. The move was made to fill the hole created by Eric Milton's anticipated surgery Monday for a left knee injury. The rookie Ramirez was 0-3 with a 9.31 ERA in his four starts for the Reds in 2005.

Before Cincinnati's Monday showdown against San Francisco, the Reds outrighted Ricky Stone to the minors and recalled Ramirez to start the Fourth of July contest. The 22-year-old Ramirez was 2-1 with a 3.47 ERA for Triple-A Louisville. In five games (three starts) for the Reds earlier in the season, the righthander was 0-3 with a 6.75 ERA in 18.2 innings.

On Thursday, the Cincinnati Reds activated righthander Luke Hudson from the disabled list and optioned Ramirez to Triple-A Louisville to make room for him. Ramirez made five appearances (three starts) for the Reds, posting an 0-3 record and 6.75 ERA in 18.2 innings. Ramirez will work as a starter at Louisville.

Ramirez will make the first start of his major league career when he takes the mound against Vicente Padilla and the Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday. The righthander is filling in for Brandon Claussen, who was forced to leave his last start after suffering a bruised pitching arm and sprained left ankle when he was hit by a line drive.

Ramirez will move back to the bullpen or return to the minor leagues once Claussen has recovered. In eight career relief appearances, he has posted a 4.76 ERA, striking out 10 and walking seven in 17 innings of work.

With shortstop Rich Aurilia landing on the 15-day disabled list with a strained hamstring, the Cincinnati Reds have filled the hole on the roster by recalling Ramirez from Triple-A Louisville. The righthander has made six starts for the minor league club this season, going 2-1 with 3.32 ERA. He has 27 strikeouts and just five walks in 38 innings of work.

Brandon Claussen currently is questionable for his next start after taking a line drive off his pitching arm and spraining his left ankle on Tuesday. If he isn't ready for his next turn in the rotation, Ramirez will fill in.
