Brian Bruney

8/2/2005

Bruney's grip on Arizona's ninth-inning duties seems to be slipping after the 23-year-old righthander allowed two ninth-inning runs to the Chicago Cubs on Friday, costing him a save and sticking him with a loss. On Saturday, Arizona skipper Bob Melvin turned to Greg Aquino, who worked two innings to secure his first save of 2005.

Bruney has struggled as the Arizona closer since Brandon Lyon went on the disabled list in mid-May, and on Sunday, Greg Aquino came off the DL after a lengthy struggle with elbow inflammation. The stage may be set for a battle for ninth-inning duties between Bruney and Aquino.

With regular closer Brandon Lyon landing on the 15-day disabled list with mild tendinitis in his pitching elbow, Bruney will handle the majority of the Diamondbacks' save situations over the next couple of weeks. The 23-year-old righthander has notched saves in each of his last two appearances, and is 0-1 with a 3.86 ERA in 21 relief appearances this season. He has 20 strikeouts and 15 walks in 21 innings of work.
