Michael Wuertz

Wuertz was recalled from Triple-A Iowa Sunday.

Wuertz was optioned by the Cubs to Triple-A Iowa on Sunday to make room for pitcher Jae Kuk Ryu. This is Wuertz's second trip to Iowa this season after being optioned on April 15.

There was speculation that Wuertz could see the majority of the save situations for the Chicago Cubs in the coming weeks, considering Chad Fox is sidelined indefinitely with an elbow injury and LaTroy Hawkins has struggled in the closer role recently. However, the righthander pitched in middle relief on Tuesday, and manager Dusty Baker said each game's situation will determine who gets the ball in the final inning or two.

Baker indicated that Hawkins and lefthander Mike Remlinger are the top options, but Wuertz could figure into the mix as well. So, it appears the Cubs will go with a closer-by-committee approach, at least until Joe Borowski returns from his broken wrist or the team acquires a proven closer via trade. Wuertz has experience as a closer, notching 19 saves with Triple-A Iowa last season.

With Chad Fox sidelined with an elbow injury and LaTroy Hawkins recent struggles in the closer role, the Cubs reportedly will turn to Wuertz in most save opportunities for the time being. The righthander has been solid in 11 relief appearances this season, going 1-0 with a 0.96 ERA. He's fanned nine batters and walked three in 9.1 innings of work.

The closer saga in Chicago continues. Wuertz likely will handle most of the save chances, at least until Joe Borowski returns from his broken wrist or the team acquires a proven closer via trade. Wuertz has experience as a closer, notching 19 saves with Triple-A Iowa last season.
