Casey Kotchman

8/30/2005

First baseman Darin Erstad has been asked by Angels manager Mike Scioscia to start stretching out his arm for a possible return to the outfield. The request is fueling speculation that the Angels will move struggling center fielder Steve Finley to the bench, replacing him with Erstad and creating an opening for Kotchman at first base.

Kotchman homered among his three hits in the Angels' 13-4 win over the Boston Red Sox Thursday, scoring three times while driving in two. Since his recall on August 4, he has hit .297 with five home runs and nine RBI, good for a .703 slugging percentage.

Kotchman, a top-flight hitting prospect in the Angels' system, stroked two home runs, including his first major league grand slam, and drove in five runs in the Angels' 10-4 victory over Tampa Bay Sunday. The 22-year-old first baseman connected on his first big league dinger on Friday, and he went 4-for-8 with three homers, four runs scored and six RBI in the weekend series with the Devil Rays, playing for the injured Darin Erstad.

The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim placed lefthander Jarrod Washburn on the 15-day disabled list Thursday and recalled Kotchman from Triple-A Salt Lake. A premier hitting prospect, Kotchman was batting .289 with 10 home runs and 58 RBI in 94 games for Salt Lake. The first baseman's hitting percentages there were .289/.372/.441.

In order to make room for Tuesday's starting pitcher, top prospect Ervin Santana, the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim optioned Kotchman back to Triple-A Salt Lake after Monday's 11-1 romp over the Washington Nationals. While Kotchman didn't strike out in seven games during his major league stint, he went 0-for-10 with only a pair of walks to give him at least one hitting percentage that isn't made up of zeroes.

Kotchman and the Angels' other DH options won't see as many at-bats this week, when the Angels play interleague series in Atlanta and New York. Kotchman has gone 0-for-8 since his recall last week, and now he may have to pursue his first major league hit of 2005 as a pinch-hitter.

The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim put outfielder Curtis Pride on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday and recalled Kotchman. The premier first-base prospect started as the Angels' designated hitter in Tuesday night's loss to the Chicago White Sox, and the 22-year-old rookie went 0-for-4.
