Chris Shelton

4/17/2006

Although his Detroit Tigers lost 10-2 to the Cleveland Indians Monday afternoon, Shelton homered in his third straight game to claim the major league lead with nine longballs. He has needed just 13 games to hit nine homers, and only three other players have done that to start a season. Hall of Famer Mike Schmidt hit 11 home runs in the first 13 games of the 1976 season, and Larry Walker in 1997 and Luis Gonzalez in 2001 stroked nine in 13 games.

Shelton continued his hot hitting in Wednesday's win over the Cleveland Indians, going 3-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored. Since being recalled at the end of May, the Tigers' first baseman is batting .343 with five home runs and 22 RBI.

Shelton and Dmitri Young have been sharing first-base and DH duties of late, but only one of them can be in the lineup each night this week. The Detroit Tigers play interleague series in Los Angeles and Colorado, eliminating the DH option.

Shelton, a Rule 5 acquisition in 2004 by Detroit, has been recalled by the Tigers to replace struggling first baseman Carlos Pena on the 25-man roster. Shelton has been impressive at Triple-A Toledo this spring, batting .331 with eight homers and 39 RBI in 48 games.
