Matt Belisle

7/14/2006

The Reds put Belisle back on the 15-day disabled list Friday. Belisle was on the 15-day disabled list from May 30 to June 26 because of a sore back.

Belisle was activated off the 15-day disabled list on Tuesday. The Reds' right-handed reliever went on the DL May 30 with a strained lower back and made six minor league rehab appearances. He is 2-0 with a 3.86 ERA in 14 appearances for Cincinnati this season and will try to shore up the Reds' bullpen, which has a 5.07 ERA.

According to Reds manager Jerry Narron, Belisle could be called upon in save situations more often. The righthander, who began the 2005 campaign in the starting rotation, notched his first career save by shutting down the San Francisco Giants in the final inning of Monday's 11-10 victory. For the year, he is 2-5 with a 4.13 ERA in 25 appearances, including five starts.

Belisle will remain in the Cincinnati Reds' starting rotation for the time being, as righthander Ramon Ortiz has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right groin. Belisle got the nod against the Cardinals last Wednesday in Ortiz' stead and gave up just one run on four hits in five innings of work. He struck out six, walked one and picked up the win.

Belisle is scheduled to take the mound against Kerry Wood and the Chicago Cubs on Monday. Ortiz' injury is not considered serious, so he should be back within the next couple of weeks.

Filling in for Ramon Ortiz, who is nursing a stiff groin, Belisle will get the starting nod for the Cincinnati Reds in Wednesday's game against the St. Louis Cardinals. The righthander has pitched in just two games so far this season, allowing two runs on three hits in 2.2 innings. He'll likely be on a pitch count, since he hasn't seen an extended appearance in quite some time.

Belisle is no stranger to the starting rotation, as every one of his 123 minor league outings came as a starter. In those contests, he went 36-46 with a 4.00 ERA.
