Doug Waechter

7/26/2005

As anticipated, Waechter was activated from the 15-day disabled list by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in time to take the mound against the Boston Red Sox Monday night. The 24-year-old righthander, who is returning after nearly a month's absence with tendinitis in his right index finger, pitched a solid game, allowing just one run on five hits over 5.2 innings, striking out seven and walking two. However, he did not figure into the decision.

Waechter still is on track to be activated from the disabled list in time to start against David Wells and the Boston Red Sox on Monday night. The 24-year-old righthander, who is returning from tendinitis in his right index finger, is 3-6 with a 5.55 ERA in 12 starts and four relief appearances this season.

On Wednesday, Waechter worked a minor league rehab start for Triple-A Durham, which is a tuneup for returning to the Tampa Bay rotation on Monday against Boston. Out with tendinitis in his right index finger, Waechter has tweaked the grip on his fastball, hoping that will reduce the risk of the tendinitis returning.

Prior to their series finale against Minnesota on Sunday, the Tampa Bay Devil Rays placed Waechter on the 15-day disabled list with tendinitis in his right index finger. The move was made retroactive to June 29. The Rays recalled lefthanded reliever Joe Beimel from Triple-A Durham to take Waechter's roster spot.

In Tampa Bay's revamped bullpen, Waechter, Dewon Brazelton and Chad Orvella will be working in the setup role for the Rays. The trio will pitch in key game situations, which means close games and occasional chances to pick up decisions.

6/24/2005

Except for an impressive eight-inning stint against Milwaukee on June 13, Waechter's last solid start for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays would be a month earlier on May 13. After the 24-year-old righthander starts for the Rays Friday against the Florida Marlins, he will move to the bullpen. Waechter is 3-4 with a 5.63 ERA in 14 games.

Recalled a few days ago, Waechter looked like a solid candidate to start in place of injured Mark Hendrickson on Wednesday night against Texas. Instead, the Devil Rays recalled John Webb to make that Wednesday start. Still, Waechter will start on Saturday against Boston and Rob Bell will be moved to the bullpen. Waechter very well could stick in the Rays' rotation.

Waechter has made one relief appearance since his recall, tossing three scoreless innings of one-hit ball against Boston on Sunday. He'll try to duplicate that magic on Saturday.
