Mike Wood

7/4/2006

The Royals placed Wood on the 15-day disabled list Monday with back inflammation. Manager Buddy Bell said right-hander Luke Hudson will take Wood's spot in the rotation, becoming the 13th starter used by Kansas City before the All-Star break.

With Zack Greinke still out facing personal issues and Mark Redman rehabbing from knee surgery, there's a good chance Wood will move into the Royals' starting rotation for the start of the season. The likelihood of that happening has increased, as it appears Redman won't be ready to return by April 14, the date the Royals would need a fifth starter for the first time.

The Kansas City Royals recalled Wood from Triple-A Omaha on Saturday. The pitcher will replace the demoted Kyle Snyder in the Royals' rotation, with his next scheduled start coming Tuesday against the Cleveland Indians. Wood worked out of the bullpen in his earlier stint with Kansas City this season, going 3-4 with a 4.03 ERA in 37 games.

After allowing 11 runs -- six earned -- in his last 7.2 innings of work, Wood has been optioned to Triple-A Omaha by the Kansas City Royals. The righthander will be replaced in the bullpen by Shawn Camp, whose contract was purchased from the minor league club on Monday.

When the Kansas City Royals put starting pitcher Brian Anderson on the disabled list Monday for an elbow ailment, they recalled Leo Nunez, a candidate for the Royals' bullpen. That means a starter will be needed from the pen, and Wood is the likely candidate.

Wood was a starter throughout his minor league career, and he was 11-3 with a 2.80 ERA in 15 starts for Triple-A Sacramento in 2004. Working out of the pen for the Royals this season, he is 1-2 with a 5.03 ERA in 10 games.
