Sergio Mitre

5/13/2006

Mitre was placed on the 15-day disabled list by the Marlins due to a shoulder injury. The right-hander suffered the injury after throwing three pitches in the first inning of a 12-9 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday. He exited the game after feeling discomfort in the shoulder.

The Chicago Cubs have traded Mitre and minor league pitchers Renyel Pinto and Ricky Nolasco to the Florida Marlins in exchange for center fielder Juan Pierre. The 24-year-old right-hander spent the majority of the 2005 campaign with the Cubs' minor league affiliate in Iowa, going 5-6 with a 4.33 ERA.

The Chicago Cubs have recalled Mitre from Triple-A Iowa. The 24-year-old righthander spent half of May, June and July with the Cubs before a demotion to Iowa a month ago. He was 2-5 with a 5.66 ERA in 16 games (seven starts) with Chicago. He was hurt by the longball, allowing 10 in 55.2 innings. At Iowa, he finished 5-6 with a 4.33 ERA in 13 starts.

8/7/2005

On Friday, the Chicago Cubs optioned Mitre to Triple-A Iowa before taking on the New York Mets in the opener of a three-game series. The 24-year-old righthander has been called on to start and relieve for the injury-plagued Cubs staff this season. He has gone 2-3 with a 5.19 ERA in seven starts, and 0-2 with a 7.30 ERA in nine relief appearances.

Mitre pitched a gem in Wednesday's meeting with the Toronto Blue Jays and picked up his first victory of the 2005 campaign. The Cubs' 24-year-old righthander allowed just two hits over seven shutout innings before giving way to reliever Michael Wuertz in the eighth. He struck out six, walked one and added an RBI double at the plate.

To fill the fifth spot in the starting rotation, Mitre has been recalled from Triple-A Iowa by the Chicago Cubs. The righthander gets a tough first assignment in his 2005 debut, as he will take the mound against future Hall of Famer Roger Clemens and the Houston Astros Tuesday night at Wrigley Field. In eight starts with the minor league club this season, Mitre was 3-4 with a 4.60 ERA.

Mitre has been recalled from Triple-A Iowa by the Chicago Cubs, filling the roster spot of the demoted Jon Leicester. The Cubs don't need a fifth starter for another two weeks, so Mitre likely will pitch in long relief over that span. Whether he will step into the rotation after that time is yet to be determined. Mitre is 2-3 with a 5.34 ERA in six starts with the minor league club this season, striking out 27 and walking 12 in 32 innings of work.

Over the past two seasons, Mitre has appeared in 15 games with Chicago, including 11 starts. In those contests, he's posted a 2-5 record and 6.86 ERA.
