Kevin Correia

4/7/2006

The San Francisco Giants placed left-handed starter Noah Lowry on the 15-day disabled list Friday and recalled Correia from Triple-A Fresno to take his place on the roster. A right-hander, Correia will work out of the bullpen for now, as the Giants don't need a fifth starter until their April 15 game against the Dodgers in Los Angeles.

Correia is expected to miss his next scheduled start on Tuesday against the Dodgers with what is being termed a bone bruise in the back of his right shoulder. The San Francisco righthander left his last start after just two innings due to shoulder discomfort. Correia has started 10 games for the Giants this season, posting a 2-4 record with a 4.47 ERA.

After making three relief appearances late last month, Correia returned to the San Francisco Giants' starting rotation on Thursday, replacing struggling veteran Kirk Rueter. The 24-year-old righthander allowed just two runs on six hits over six innings in the 6-4 loss, but did not figure into the decision. He struck out six and walked three.

Correia was sent to Class-A San Jose earlier this month to make a start during the major league's All-Star break, but he has been recalled from the minor league club by the San Francisco Giants. The righthander, who will fill the fifth spot in the Giants' starting rotation, is slated to take the mound against the Atlanta Braves on Monday.

After notching the win in Wednesday's 7-2 victory over the Cincinnati Reds, Correia was optioned to Class-A San Jose by the San Francisco Giants, which will allow him to get a start in during the major league's upcoming All-Star break. The righthander has made just two starts for the Giants this season, going 1-0 with a 3.60 ERA. Infielder Brian Dallimore was recalled to fill the void on the roster.

With Brett Tomko's recent demotion to the bullpen, the Giants will recall Correia from Triple-A Fresno to fill the void in the starting rotation. The righthander, who is slated to take the mound against the San Diego Padres on Friday, is 3-2 with a 6.07 in 31 appearances with the minor league club this season, including three starts.
