Wellemeyer has been recalled from Triple-A Iowa by the Chicago Cubs, filling the roster spot of injured starter Kerry Wood. Wellemeyer began the season on the major league roster, but was demoted after posting a 7.71 ERA in three relief appearances.

With Glendon Rusch moving into the starting rotation in Wood's absence, Wellemeyer will give the Cubs another arm in the bullpen.

Wellemeyer has been optioned to Triple-A Iowa by the Chicago Cubs, opening a spot on the roster for starter Mark Prior, who was activated from the 15-day disabled list on Tuesday. In three appearances this season, Wellemeyer has allowed two runs on six hits in 2.1 innings.

Wellemeyer serves as a reliever with Chicago, but he is scheduled to start on Friday for the minor league club. For his career, he is 3-2 with a 6.29 ERA and one save in 38 games with the Cubs.
