Laird, who played in the minors in 2005 after starting last season as the Rangers' starting catcher, was recalled by Texas Thursday. The 25-year-old prospect put together a solid season at Triple-A Oklahoma, batting .310 with 17 home runs and 55 RBI in 75 games. He also posted a .380 on-base percentage and .562 slugging mark.

With Rod Barajas returning as the starting catcher on Tuesday night, the Texas Rangers optioned Laird back to Triple-A Oklahoma barely more than 24 hours after he arrived and activated righthander Joaquin Benoit from the 15-day disabled list. Laird made the start behind the plate Monday, and he was 0-for-4 in his only appearance for the Rangers. At Oklahoma, the 25-year-old prospect is a .286 hitter with 12 home runs and 40 RBI in 54 games.

With starting catcher Rod Barajas nursing a minor back ailment, the Texas Rangers recalled Laird from Triple-A Oklahoma on Monday. The 25-year-old catcher was in the Rangers' starting lineup Monday night against the Angels. Laird went 0-for-4 in his first major league appearance of 2005.

Laird has been optioned to Triple-A Oklahoma by the Texas Rangers. The catcher appeared in 49 games with Texas last season, batting .224 with one home run and 16 RBI.

Sandy Alomar will serve as Rod Barajas' primary backup behind the plate to begin the season.
