Claudio Vargas

1/17/2006

Vargas avoided salary arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $1,275,000 contract with Arizona on Monday. Vargas went 9-6 in 21 appearances, including 19 starts, for the Diamondbacks after the team acquired the right-hander from Washington in June. He was 0-3 with the Nationals.

With Russ Ortiz sidelined for at least the next couple of weeks with a strained muscle in his side, Vargas will step into a starting role and fill the void in the Diamondbacks' rotation. The righthander, who was claimed off waivers from the Washington Nationals last month, is 0-4 with a 10.18 ERA in seven appearances this season, including five starts.

Due to a doubleheader on Saturday, the Diamondbacks likely will be forced to use a spot starter on Wednesday. According to manager Bob Melvin, Vargas will be the top option to get the nod. The righthander was claimed off waivers from the Washington Nationals, who designated him for assignment last week.

The Arizona Diamondbacks have claimed Vargas off waivers from the Washington Nationals. The righthander was designated for assignment last week after going 0-3 with a 9.24 ERA and 2.29 WHIP in four major league starts this season.

Vargas failed to get out of the second inning in Wednesday's loss to the Cincinnati Reds, allowing three runs on three hits and three walks in just 1.2 innings of work. It was his third poor performance in a row, prompting the Nationals to designate him for assignment. He will be replaced on the roster by Sunny Kim.

As anticipated, Vargas made his 2005 season debut in Wednesday's matchup with the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Nationals' righthander, who missed nearly two months with a sprained pitching elbow, turned in a solid performance, allowing just one unearned run on six hits in six innings of work. He struck out three and walked none.

The Nationals moved the struggling Tomo Ohka to the bullpen to open a spot in the starting rotation for Vargas. In 45 appearances last season, including 14 starts, Vargas was 5-5 with a 5.25 ERA.

Vargas has finished up his rehab time with Triple-A New Orleans and will be activated from the 15-day disabled list by the Washington Nationals in time to take the mound against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Wednesday. The righthander, who was working his way back from a sprained pitching elbow, takes the roster spot of demoted outfielder Endy Chavez. Vargas went 2-2 with a 4.18 ERA in five starts with the minor league club.

With Vargas joining the rotation, the struggling Tomo Ohka will be moved to the bullpen. In 45 relief appearances last season, including 14 starts, Vargas was 5-5 with a 5.25 ERA.
