Jose Contreras

7/5/2006

Contreras won his 17th straight decision on Tuesday, pitching 6 2-3 scoreless innings in a 13-0 win over Baltimore. The White Sox right-hander allowed six hits and no walks while striking out three. His last regular-season defeat was Aug. 15 to Minnesota, and he is unbeaten in 23 starts since then, posting a 2.86 ERA in that span.

7/3/2006

Chicago's Contreras was selected to his first All-Star team on Sunday as a starting pitcher for the American League. Contreras is 8-0 with a 3.54 ERA this season.

6/13/2006

Contreras won his 15th straight decision on Monday, tying the franchise record for consecutive wins set by LaMarr Hoyt (1983-84) and Wilson Alvarez (1993-94). Contreras hasn't lost in the regular season since last Aug. 15. The White Sox right-hander allowed three runs and six hits against the Texas Rangers while striking out a career-high 11.

As anticipated, Contreras will return to the White Sox's rotation Sunday to face the Chicago Cubs in their weekend interleague series. He is expected to be activated from the disabled list after throwing 98 pitches during a bullpen session Thursday. Contreras went on the DL May 9 with a pinched nerve in his right leg. He is 5-0 with a 1.41 ERA.

5/10/2006

The Chicago White Sox placed Contreras on the 15-day disabled list late Tuesday with a pinched nerve in his right leg. The right-hander will miss at least two starts. The White Sox hope to have him back for their three-game series against the crosstown rival Cubs beginning May 19.

5/9/2006

Contreras may be headed for the disabled list, according to the Chicago Tribune. The White Sox's ace, who is 5-0 this season and has won 13 consecutive decisions, is bothered by lower back and hip pain that surfaced during a recent bullpen session between starts. Chicago general manager Ken Williams told the Tribune that a decision regarding a DL stint for Contreras will be made Tuesday.

5/4/2006

Contreras won his 13th straight decision Thursday, dating to last season, as he improved to 5-0 in a 4-1 victory over the Seattle Mariners. The White Sox's right-hander became the American League's first five-game winner by allowing just one run, four hits and three walks over 7 1/3 innings. The only run he allowed came in the sixth when he walked three, including Adrian Beltre with the bases loaded. Contreras retired 14 in a row before getting into trouble.

4/12/2006

Contreras tossed eight innings of one-run ball in the White Sox's 4-3 win over the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday.

4/1/2006

Contreras agreed to a three-year, $29 million contract extension on Saturday. The White Sox right hander was 15-7 with a 3.61 ERA last season and had a 3-1 record in the postseason that helped his team win its first World Series title since 1917. Contreras will earn $9 million in 2007 and $10 million in 2008 and 2009 under the extension.

3/19/2006

Contreras is expected to return to the mound next Saturday after experiencing no pain in his arm while playing catch on March 18. He will throw bullpen sessions on Monday and Wednesday. Contreras is experiencing lower tricep stiffness.

10/17/2005

In going the distance for the win that put the Chicago White Sox into the 2005 World Series, Contreras executed the fourth straight complete-game victory over the Los Angeles Angels by Sox pitchers. Contreras, who allowed five hits and two walks in a 6-3 win, followed in the footsteps of teammates Mark Buehrle, Jon Garland and Freddy Garcia.

4/26/2005

On Monday, two days after straining his right hamstring, Contreras put the hammy through some serious tests on the field and showed the injury wasn't serious. If the White Sox' righthander handles his throwing session on the side Tuesday without any difficulties, he should be in line to make his scheduled start against Detroit on Friday night.

If Contreras can't go on Friday, Thursday's off day would allow the White Sox to simply move up the rest of the rotation by a day.

4/25/2005

Contreras left Saturday night's start in the fourth inning with a strained right hamstring. The White Sox' righthander had been cruising to that point, fanning six through 3.1 innings while giving up just a home run to the Royals' David DeJesus.

Contreras, who said he felt a tweak in the muscle covering first base on a grounder, is feeling better and says he won't miss his next scheduled start later in the week.
