Jeff Baker

4/27/2005

Baker has been optioned to Triple-A Colorado Springs by the Colorado Rockies, opening a spot on the roster for Garrett Atkins, who was activated from the 15-day disabled list on Tuesday. Atkins was slated to be the Rockies' Opening Day third baseman this season, but a strained hamstring forced the team to turn to Baker for the first couple of weeks.

Baker and Desi Relaford split time at the hot corner in Atkins' absence. In 12 games this season, Baker is batting .211 with one home run and four RBI, but he's fanned 12 times in 38 at-bats.

As anticipated, Baker got the starting nod at third base for the Colorado Rockies in Monday's Opening Day battle with the San Diego Padres, making his major league debut. The infielder, who was recalled from Double-A Tulsa to fill in for the injured Garrett Atkins, went 2-for-5 in the game, including a two-run home run in the third inning.

Baker should get most of the starts at the hot corner until Atkins can return, which will be at least a couple of weeks from now. Baker split last season between Class-A and Double-A, hitting a combined .318 with 15 home runs and 84 RBI in 97 games.
