7/31/2005

Olivo was traded to the San Diego Padres in return for catcher Miguel Ojeda and minor league pitcher Nate Mateo.

After almost a full month at Triple-A Tacoma, the Seattle Mariners recalled Olivo on Tuesday. The veteran catcher batted just .238 at Tacoma, where he was looking to find his stroke, but he drove in 21 runs in 24 games. At the time of his May 30 demotion, Olivo had lost Seattle's starting catcher job and was batting .145 with two home runs and 14 RBI in 37 games.

On Monday, the Seattle Mariners optioned Olivo to Triple-A Tacoma and called up catcher Rene Rivera from Double-A San Antonio. Olivo will try to get his bat going with Tacoma, after batting .145 with no hitting percentage anywhere near .300 in 115 plate appearances this spring.

In Seattle, Olivo had seen Wiki Gonzalez take over most of the starts behind the plate over the last week, but Olivo became the uncontested No. 1 catcher again when Gonzalez went on the disabled list Sunday. Gonzalez is out with a left hamstring injury, and the Mariners recalled catcher Rene Rivera to take his roster spot.

Olivo went 3-for-4 with a double, homer and two RBI in Sunday's 5-4 win over Boston. His productive Sunday ended an 0-for-27 skid.

Wiki Gonzalez started behind the plate for the Seattle Mariners and went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles on Sunday, in his first major league action in nearly two years. After the game, Seattle skipper Mike Hargrove suggested that Gonzalez may steal some starts from Olivo, who has been struggling all season.

Gonzalez wouldn't seem to be a long-term threat to Olivo's job security, but the Mariners are looking for some punch for their lineup. For the season, Olivo doesn't have a hitting percentage above the Mendoza line (.139/.182/.181), and he's currently in an 0-for-19 funk. His hitless streak includes eight strikeouts.
