Bill Hall

9/16/2005

Hall produced a career-high five hits against Arizona on Thursday, posting a double, triple and three runs scored in a 14-2 Milwaukee romp over the Diamondbacks. With five hits in six trips to the plate, Hall now has a six-game hitting streak in which he is 13-for-25 (.520) with five doubles and seven runs scored.

With the Milwaukee Brewers activating third baseman Russell Branyan from the disabled list before Monday's game against Florida, Hall probably will get most of his starts at shortstop down the stretch. The 25-year-old Hall would displace struggling rookie J.J. Hardy at short.

Hall may get most of the Brewers' starts at third base for the foreseeable future, after Jeff Cirillo broke his left hand on Friday night. Cirillo will miss 4-6 weeks, so Hall and Wes Helms will take over at third. Hall is having a breakout season, batting .306 with 18 doubles, 11 home runs, 35 runs scored and 31 RBI in 64 games.

With a pair of solo shots off starter Jerome Williams, Hall notched the first multihomer game of his major league career in Tuesday's loss to the Chicago Cubs. The Brewers' infielder already has belted a career-high 10 home runs this season.

Hall now has played five straight games as the starter at shortstop for Milwaukee, and he's hit safely in all five games. That's a modest hitting streak, but the 25-year-old Hall is batting .368 (7-for-19) with a double, triple and four RBI over that stretch.

For the last three games, Hall has started at shortstop for Milwaukee over highly regarded rookie J.J. Hardy. Whill Hardy has continued his season-long slump, Hall has earned a larger role. In 18 games since April 29, Hall is 20-for-61 (.328) with four doubles, two triples, two homers and 10 runs scored. He is 4-for-10 (.400) with a triple in those three starts at short in recent days.

As recently as last week, Hall was batting a dismal .179 for the season. However, the Brewers' infielder has been on fire since, putting together a five-game hitting streak, including three consecutive three-hit contests. He has 12 hits in his last 21 at-bats with three doubles, a triple, home run and four RBI.

With J.J. Hardy's recent struggles, Hall could take over as the Brewers' everyday shortstop, especially if he continues to produce at the plate. For the season, he is batting .347 with one home run and six RBI in 20 games.
