Matt Childers

5/30/2005

Opening roster space for new starting left fielder Kelly Johnson, the Atlanta Braves have designated Childers for assignment. The rookie righthander has appeared in just three games with the Braves this season, allowing two runs on five hits in four innings. He struck out two and walked three.

The Atlanta Braves have purchased Childers' contract from Triple-A Richmond, filling the roster spot of starter John Thomson, who will be sidelined indefinitely with a strained tendon in the middle finger of his pitching hand. In 15 appearances with the minor league club this season, Childers, a 26-year-old righthander, is 2-0 with a 3.26 ERA.

Childers will pitch in relief with the Braves. He has not appeared in a major league contest since the 2002 campaign. The team has not determined who will handle Thomson's starting duties, but Adam Bernero is the top candidate at this point.
