David Ross

7/8/2006

Ross left Cincinnati's 10-5 win over Atlanta on Friday with a lower abdominal strain. He was injured after hitting an RBI double in the second inning. He pulled up leaving the batter's box and then jogged to second. It's not yet known how long he'll be out. Ross is batting .311 with 12 homers and 31 RBIs in 45 games for the Reds this season.

Any notion that Ross would be the primary catcher in San Diego went out the window when the Padres acquired Miguel Olivo from Seattle late on Saturday. Ross was acquired from Pittsburgh just before the weekend, after starting catcher Ramon Hernandez went down with a wrist injury that required arthroscopic surgery.

In search of a catcher after losing Ramon Hernandez to wrist surgery this week, the San Diego Padres acquired Ross from Pittsburgh Thursday for minor league shortstop J.J. Furmaniak. Ross, who was with Triple-A Indianapolis at the time of the trade, is expected to be in San Diego for Friday night's game against Cincinnati.

In order to free up a roster spot for Craig Wilson, the Pirates optioned Ross to Triple-A Indianapolis on Saturday. The catcher was batting .222 with three homers and 15 RBI in his first season with Pittsburgh.
