Aaron Harang

3/9/2006

Harang was scratched from his spring training start Thursday because of right shoulder inflammation. Reds trainer Mark Mann told the Cincinnati Enquirer that the right-hander has been bothered by mild inflammation over the last week, but it's not considered serious. The Reds are not pursuing an X-ray or MRI exam.

Harang avoided salary arbitration by agreeing to a $2.35 million, one-year contract with the Reds on Tuesday. The right-hander went 11-13 with a 3.83 ERA in 32 starts last season. He also had one of Cincinnati's two complete games.

The Reds had gone a club-record 94 games without a complete game this season before Harang went the distance in Wednesday's 9-3 victory over the Chicago Cubs. The big righthander allowed three runs on seven hits -- including two home runs -- in nine innings of work. He struck out one and did not walk a batter.

Questionable for Monday's start because of lingering effects from the flu, Harang took the mound anyway, and it was a good thing for the Reds that he did. The righthander scattered five hits over seven shutout innings to record the win. He walked just one batter and struck out 10, tying a career high.

Harang was scheduled to take the mound against the Washington Nationals on Wednesday, but he was a late scratch after coming down with flu-like symptoms. In the righthander's absence, Matt Belisle got the nod -- his fourth start of the 2005 campaign. Harang is listed as day-to-day.

If it would have not been for the Reds' bullpen blowing a four-run lead in the ninth inning, Harang was in line to notch the victory in Monday's game against the San Diego Padres. The righthander allowed just one run on three hits in eight innings of work, striking out eight and walking two. He did not figure into the decision.

Harang has pitched well overall this season, but has just one win to show for it. In seven starts, he is 1-2 with a 3.45 ERA, along with 34 strikeouts and 14 walks in 44.1 innings.
