Ty Wigginton

7/30/2006

The Devil Rays placed infielder Wigginton on the 15-day disabled list Sunday with a broken bone in his left hand. Wigginton was injured when he was hit by a pitch from Shawn Chacon in the fourth inning of Saturday's 19-6 victory over the New York Yankees. He will see team orthopedist Dr. Koco Eaton on Monday for further evaluation.

Wigginton is playing well in place of injured third baseman Aubrey Huff. The Tampa Bay infielder will continue to play, perhaps getting some starts at second after Jorge Cantu went on the disabled list Wednesday with a broken bone in his left foot. In 19 games this season, Wigginton is hitting .297 with eight home runs and 22 RBIs.

Wigginton was recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis on Monday Night after Jose Castillo was placed on the 15-day disabled list. The utilityman, who was sent down on June 6 after losing his job to Freddy Sanchez, was hitting .206 with five home runs and 11 RBIs when he was demoted.

After losing his starting job to Freddy Sanchez last week, things got even worse for Wigginton on Saturday, as he was optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis by the Pittsburgh Pirates. The third baseman, who was acquired from the New York Mets in the Kris Benson trade last year, is batting just .204 with five home runs and 11 RBI in 35 games this season.

Wigginton has struggled this season, and now he's losing his grip on Pittsburgh's third-base job. On Thursday, manager Lloyd McClendon said that Freddy Sanchez would get most of the at-bats at third for the foreseeable future. Wigginton already was sharing time with Rob Mackowiak, Bobby Hill and Sanchez, after beginning the new season with the starting job.

Wigginton, who has spent the majority of the season below the Mendoza line, boosted his average back to .200 with his performance in Wednesday's loss to the St. Louis Cardinals. The Pirates' infielder went 3-for-4, belting two home runs, driving in three and scoring three times.
