Andres Torres

6/12/2005

The Rangers designated Torres for assignment on Sunday. The reserve outfielder had just three hits in 19 at-bats for the parent club this year. In parts of four big league seasons, he now owns a career .210 batting average.

Torres said Wednesday that he is playing with a torn labrum in his left shoulder that will require surgery in the offseason. The injury occurred last year at Triple-A Charlotte, causing the Rangers' backup outfielder to miss more than a month of the minor league season. He is 1-for-8 (.125) in three games since joining the Rangers on May 15.

The Texas Rangers recalled Torres from Triple-A Oklahoma after Gary Matthews Jr. went on the 15-day disabled list with a hamstring injury. Torres was batting .302 with six steals for Oklahoma, though he hasn't played since April 28 because of a strained shoulder.

Torres will serve as a backup outfielder while Matthews is out.
