The San Diego Padres placed starting pitcher Shawn Estes on the 15-day disabled list Friday and recalled Cassidy from Triple-A Portland to take his roster spot. The 30-year-old right-hander was on the opening day roster, but was optioned to Portland after Monday's win over the Giants to make room for catcher Rob Bowen. He has yet to pitch for the Padres.

On Tuesday, the Boston Red Sox traded Cassidy to the San Diego Padres for Adam Hyzdu. Cassidy had spent a week with the Red Sox this month, making one appearance and allowing four hits and three runs in two-thirds of an inning. At Triple-A Pawtucket, he had been a somewhat successful reliever, going 6-3 with a 4.05 ERA and 66 strikeouts in 60 innings.

With the acquisition of reliever Chad Bradford and Curt Schilling coming off the disabled list to work in the Boston bullpen, the Red Sox outrighted Cassidy to Triple-A Pawtucket. The 29-year-old righthander made one appearance during his brief stay with Boston, allowing four hits and three runs in two-thirds of an inning.

On Wednesday, the Boston Red Sox placed closer Keith Foulke on the 15-day disabled list and recalled Cassidy from Triple-A Pawtucket. The 29-year-old righthander was 6-3 with a 3.81 ERA in 25 games at Pawtucket. He will be making his first big league appearance since working 58 games and posting a 5.73 ERA for Toronto in 2002.
