Alfredo Amezaga

5/5/2005

Amezaga has been designated for assignment by the Pittsburgh Pirates, opening a spot on the active roster for second baseman Jose Castillo. In three games during his short stint with Pittsburgh, Amezaga went 0-for-3 with a walk, stolen base and run scored. He was claimed off waivers from the Colorado Rockies last month.

The Pirates will have 10 days to release, trade or outright Amezaga to the minor leagues. He spent a good portion of last season with the Angels, batting .161 with two home runs, 11 RBI and three stolen bases in 73 contests. Both of his home runs were grand slams.

The Pittsburgh Pirates have claimed Amezaga off waivers from the Colorado Rockies. The infielder, who was designated for assignment last week after going 1-for-3 with a run scored in his first two games of the 2005 campaign, is scheduled to join the new club in time for Thursday's matchup with the Cincinnati Reds.

The Pirates will have to make a corresponding move to open a spot on the roster for Amezaga. He spent a good portion of last season with the Angels, batting .161 with two home runs, 11 RBI and three stolen bases in 73 contests. Both of his home runs were grand slams.

Opening a spot on the roster for veteran Desi Relaford, the Colorado Rockies have designated Amezaga for assignment. The infielder, who played shortstop, second base and third base last season, appeared in 73 games with the Angels in 2004, batting just .161 with two home runs, 11 RBI and three stolen bases.

The Rockies will have 10 days to trade, release or send Amezaga outright to the minor leagues. He has recorded just three at-bats so far this season, notching one single and a run scored.
