Jorge Sosa

7/31/2006

The Braves dealt Sosa to the St. Louis Cardinals for a minor leaguer at the trade deadline Monday, one day after the disappointing pitcher was designated for assignment.

Sosa agreed to a one-year, $2.2 million deal with the Braves on Saturday. The 28-year-old right-hander went 13-3 with a 2.55 ERA last season, including a 9-0 mark and 1.81 ERA on the road. He could earn an additional $50,000 if he pitches at least 205 innings in 2006.

With Mike Hampton landing back on the 15-day disabled list, Sosa will return to the starting rotation for the Atlanta Braves. The righthander is scheduled to take the mound against the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday afternoon.

After allowing five runs on six hits -- including three homers -- in his last start, Sosa will move back to a relief role for the Atlanta Braves. The righthander began the season in the bullpen, but was asked to step into the rotation when both John Thompson and Mike Hampton went down with injuries. Both regular starters returned to action last weekend, prompting the move.

Sosa, who has been forced into the Atlanta rotation because of injuries to Braves starters, will pitch on three days' rest Saturday in place of Tim Hudson, who became the third starter to go on the disabled list Thursday. Sosa was scheduled to make his second start for Atlanta on Sunday, but he moves up a day to cover for Hudson.
