Marlon Byrd

7/14/2006

The Nationals designated outfielder Marlon Byrd for assignment. He was acquired from Philadelphia in 2005 in a trade that sent outfielder Endy Chavez to the Phillies.

4/4/2006

Washington manager Frank Robinson said Byrd might be used as late-inning defensive replacement for Alfonso Soriano in left field.

3/28/2006

The Washington Nationals optioned Ryan Church to Triple-A New Orleans, meaning Byrd and rookie Brandon Watson will share center field to start the season. Byrd is batting .320 (16-for-50) with four doubles and two homers this spring. Church hit .200 before his demotion.

1/11/2006

Byrd avoided arbitration Wednesday, agreeing to a one-year, $800,000 contract with the Washington Nationals. The 28-year-old outfielder started last season with Philadelphia before joining the Nationals in May. He hit a combined .266 with two home runs and 26 RBIs in 229 at-bats in 2005.

8/25/2005

The Washington Nationals will recall Byrd from Triple-A New Orleans in time for the start of their three-game weekend series against the St. Louis Cardinals. The outfielder will fill the roster spot of Ryan Church, who landed on the 15-day disabled list on Thursday with a broken toe.

7/31/2005

Byrd was optioned to the Nationals' Triple-A affiliate in New Orleans, with Matt Cepicky taking his place on the major league roster.

7/27/2005

Byrd will not have to serve a two-game suspension for making contact with umpire Joe Brinkman on June 4 after winning his appeal in front of MLB on Tuesday. However, the Nationals' outfielder still will be forced to pay an undisclosed fine for being ejected from the contest. In 50 games with the Nationals this season, he is batting .245 with 16 RBI and two stolen bases.

7/13/2005

With Ryan Church coming off the disabled list on Wednesday, Byrd is likely to play less in the Washington outfield. Byrd, who had been starting in place of Church in left field, is batting .252 in 43 games for the Nationals.

6/9/2005

Byrd was suspended for two games and fined an undisclosed amount Thursday by Major League Baseball for knocking over umpire Joe Brinkman during an argument with another umpire on June 4. Brinkman and Byrd collided when the 61-year-old ump stuck out his arm to get in between Byrd and the umpire who had called Byrd out on a strike-three call.

5/14/2005

The Phillies have traded Marlon Byrd to Washington in exchange for Endy Chavez. After a strong rookie season in 2003, Byrd struggled last season, and was sent down to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in June. He hit .228 in 106 games with Philadelphia in 2004. After dislocating his right ring finger in late March, Byrd began 2005 in the minors on a rehabilitation assignment. Called up earlier this month, he is hitting .308 in five games.

5/4/2005

With Kenny Lofton going on the 15-day disabled list with tendinitis in his hamstring, the Philadelphia Phillies have filled the void on the roster by recalling Byrd from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, where he was on minor league rehab assignment. He hit .390 with 10 RBI in 14 exhibition games with the Phillies this spring, but missed some time with a broken finger. He has since recovered from the injury.

Byrd is expected to split time with Jason Michaels in center field until Lofton is able to return. In 106 games with Philly last season, Byrd batted .228 with five home runs, 33 RBI and two stolen bases.
