Victor Martinez

7/24/2006

Martinez has hit safely in 20 of his last 22 games, going 35-for-94 (.372) with 11 RBIs.

5/9/2006

Martinez's streak of reaching base via a hit, walk or hit-by-pitch stalled Sunday in Seattle. The Cleveland catcher went 0-for-4 without a free pass in a 2-0 win over the Mariners, ending his streak at 45 games. During his 45-game run, which dates to Sept. 17, Martinez batted .382 (66-for-173) with 35 runs scored, 19 doubles, six homers, 28 RBIs, 23 walks and a .452 on-base percentage.

5/5/2006

Martinez has reached base via a hit, walk or hit-by-pitch in 43 straight games. His streak dates to Sept. 17, and the Cleveland catcher is a .388 hitter in that stretch (64-for-165) with 19 doubles, six home runs, 28 RBIs and a 612 slugging mark.

5/2/2006

Martinez had two singles in four trips in Cleveland's 7-1 win over Chicago Tuesday. The Indians' catcher has now reached base via hit, walk or hit-by-pitch in 42 straight games. That's the best mark in the majors and Vernon Wells' 25-game run is the second longest.

3/24/2006

Martinez suffered a sprained ankle Wednesday when a baserunner stepped on his right foot during a minor-league game. The injury doesn't appear to be serious. The Cleveland catcher, who was playing first base when he was hurt, has been able to take batting practice.

8/23/2005

Martinez homered for the second straight game in the Indian's 11-4 win over the Devil Rays Monday.

8/10/2005

Martinez takes a seven-game hitting streak (.448, 13-for-29) into Cleveland's Wednesday night showdown with Kansas City. After batting .210 and slugging .331 through the first two months of the season, the Indians' catcher has failed to hit safely in only three of his last 24 games. Over that 24-game span, Martinez is a .412 hitter with seven doubles, five homers, 21 RBI and a .671 slugging mark.

7/7/2005

After a very slow start this season, Martinez has picked it up. The Cleveland catcher has a 17-game hitting streak in which he is 24-for-67 (.358) with 10 runs scored and 14 RBI. He has pushed his average for the season to .245, and he has nine homers and 35 RBI in 73 games.

5/30/2005

The Cleveland Indians hope Martinez' performance in Sunday's meeting with the Oakland A's is a sign of things to come. The catcher went 2-for-4 with a double and solo home run -- his best game in three weeks. Going into Sunday's contest, Martinez had just five hits in his last 47 at-bats (.106).

4/5/2005

Martinez has re-signed with the Cleveland Indians, agreeing to a new five-year, $15.5 million contract -- a deal that also includes a team option for the 2010 campaign. Last season, the catcher batted .283 with 23 home runs and 108 RBI in 141 games and was selected to the American League All-Star team.

At just 26, Martinez' best years should be in front of him. The Indians hope he is behind the dish for a long time. Before signing this contract, Martinez was slated to earn about $372,100 this season.
