Austin Kearns

1/16/2006

Kearns avoided arbitration with the Reds by signing a one-year deal Monday. Financial terms were not released. The outfielder hit .240 with a career-high 18 homers and 67 RBIs last season. He hit 12 of his home runs after his return in mid-July from a five-week stint in the minors.

Kearns has been recalled from Triple-A Louisville by the Cincinnati Reds. The outfielder was optioned to the minor league club last month after batting just .224 with six home runs and 25 RBI in 51 games this season. He has since regained his stroke at the plate, hitting .342 with seven homers and 21 RBI in 28 contests at Louisville.

The Reds optioned Kearns to Triple-A Louisville prior to their game against the Orioles on Sunday. The outfielder is slumping badly, and he is having a hard time finding regular work with Adam Dunn, Ken Griffey Jr. and Wily Mo Pena all playing well. Kearns has gone hitless in 10 of his last 11 games, and his average for the season has plummeted to .224.

Kearns has been absent from the Reds' lineup the past few days, as manager Dave Miley has decided to use Wily Mo Pena in right field instead. However, Kearns, who is batting .206 with one home run and five RBI in 10 games this season, is expected to get the nod in Wednesday's meeting with the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Kearns has fanned 12 times in 34 at-bats already this season, while Pena has been swinging a hot bat. As long as everyone in the Reds' outfield stays healthy, Kearns and Pena will continue to platoon in right.
