Brendan Donnelly

1/19/2006

Donnelly and the Angels agreed on a $950,000, one-year contract on Wednesday, avoiding arbitration. The right-handed reliever went 9-3 with a 3.72 ERA in a career-high 65 appearances last season.

Donnelly had his suspension for having pine tar on his glove during a game reduced to eight days Thursday by Major League Baseball. The original suspension was for 10 days, and the Angels' reliever will begin serving his time on Friday.

Donnelly, who was suspended 10 games by Major League Baseball a week ago for having pine tar on his glove during a game, will have his appeal heard next Friday in Kansas City. The righthanded reliever doesn't have to serve his suspension until his appeal has been heard, so he has continued to pitch for the Angels. In 29 appearances this season, Donnelly is 4-2 with a 4.22 ERA.

On Friday, Donnelly was suspended 10 games by Major League Baseball for having pine tar on his glove during Tuesday's game against the Washington Nationals. The 33-year-old righthander, who was ejected without throwing a pitch, appealed the suspension and will play for the Angels until his case is heard. He is 4-2 with a 4.34 ERA in 26 relief appearances this season.

Donnelly was ejected for having a foreign substance in his glove when he entered the Angels' Tuesday night game against the Washington Nationals. Washington manager Frank Robinson asked to have Donnelly's glove inspected when the righthander came on in the seventh inning, before he had thrown a pitch. The move led to Robinson and Angels manager Mike Scioscia verbaly sparring on the field, and both benches emptied briefly without incident.

With Angels closer Francisco Rodriguez on the shelf for at least a few days with a mild forearm strain, Scot Shields and Donnelly will get the call in the ninth inning. It was Shields' turn on Monday. He fanned two and worked a 1-2-3 ninth inning to save a 3-1 win over Cleveland.

Donnelly is 1-0 with a 2.95 ERA in 14 relief appearances. The run he allowed in the eighth inning of Monday's win was his first after nine scoreless outings that spanned 11.2 innings. Rodriguez, Shields and Donnelly have been the core of an Angels bullpen that has stranded 35 of 38 inherited runners, a league-best mark.
