Willie Harris

7/18/2006

Harris was designated for assignment by the Red Sox on Tuesday. The 28-year-old infielder batted .156 (7-for-45) with just one RBI and six stolen bases in 47 games for Boston this season.

The Chicago White Sox placed starting third baseman Joe Crede on the 15-day disabled list Monday with a fractured finger and recalled Harris from Triple-A Charlotte. The 27-year-old utilityman has batted .217 with a .287 on-base percentage in 40 games with the Sox earlier this season. At Charlotte, Harris was hitting .266 with a .360 OBP in 28 games.

To make room for trade acquisition Geoff Blum, the Chicago White Sox optioned Harris to Triple-A Charlotte on Sunday. Harris hasn't been able to get his bat going this season, hitting .217 and slugging .228 in 92 at-bats for the White Sox.

The White Sox have placed Harris on the bereavement list on Monday, keeping Harris out of the lineup for at least three days. The team did not specify why Harris left the team, only stating that it was a "personal matter." Harris cannot return to the lineup until Friday at the earliest.

It's possible that Pedro Lopez or even callup Jamie Burke will get playing time in Harris' absence.

Facing a family emergency on Sunday, Harris asked for and received permission to leave the team before the White Sox' victory over Detroit. Harris' departure left the Sox further depleted of middle infielders, but Tadahito Iguchi was back in the lineup at second for the weekend series against Detroit. Rookie Pedro Lopez started at shortstop on Sunday, making the first major league start of his career.

Harris is expected to be gone until at least Tuesday, when the Sox begin a home series against Kansas City. He had been playing more with injuries sidelining Iguchi, Pablo Ozuna and Juan Uribe.
