6/11/2006

Cruz, on the 15-day disabled list with a sore shoulder, threw off the mound on Saturday. The Arizona Diamondbacks right-hander is expected to make a few rehab starts, but there is no timetable for his return. "I wanted him to throw nice and easy," manager Bob Melvin said. "He doesn't know how to throw nice and easy."

The Arizona Diamondbacks placed Cruz on the disabled list Wednesday with stiffness in his right shoulder and reportedly planned to call up Dustin Nippert. Cruz was scratched from his scheduled start Tuesdady after he told the team his shoulder didn't feel normal.

The Oakland Athletics have opted to go with Joe Kennedy over Cruz as the rotation replacement for injured starter Rich Harden. Still, Cruz could pick up a start for the A's on Monday, as the club is thinking about giving Barry Zito an extra day or two of rest between starts in the upcoming week.

The Oakland Athletics recalled Cruz on Thursday. The former Cubs prospect, who was demoted to the minors in June with an 8.49 ERA as a reliever, returns after an impressive stint as a starter at Triple-A Sacramento. In 13 starts there, the 26-year-old righthander was 5-1 with a 2.90 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 90 strikeouts in 75 innings.

Cruz was optioned to Triple-A Sacramento on Friday. Obtained from Atlanta in the Tim Hudson trade, Cruz is 0-2 with a 8.49 ERA with the A's this season. Although his future with Oakland is still expected to be as a reliever, Cruz will go into the starting rotation at Sacramento.
