Brandon Lyon

9/20/2005

Lyon led all National League relievers in saves in mid-May, when he was sidelined by elbow troubles. The Diamondbacks' righthander bypassed surgery for rest and rehab, but he's been ripped for 16 runs in nine innings since returning in August. His closer duties have been passed on to Jose Valverde.

8/13/2005

Activated from the 60-day disabled list earlier in the day, a rusty Lyon allowed two runs on three hits in just 0.2 innings against the Atlanta Braves on Saturday. The reliever had been sidelined since May 12 with tendinitis in his pitching elbow.

8/8/2005

Lyon continues to rehab his troublesome pitching elbow in the minor leagues, and if the Diamondbacks' righthander reports no problems after pitching back-to-back days Tuesday and Wednesday, there is a solid chance that he'll be activated from the disabled list by the weekend. Once the move is made, the team plans to ease Lyon back into the closer role. Jose Valverde will handle the bulk of the duties for the time being.

7/29/2005

In his first minor league rehab appearance for Triple-A Tucson, Lyon set down the opposition 1-2-3 in the first inning.

7/26/2005

Lyon, who has been sidelined since mid-May with tendinitis in his pitching elbow, is scheduled to begin a minor league rehab assignment with Triple-A Tucson on Wednesday. The righthander will toss one inning on Thursday and again on Monday if no problems are reported. Lyon likely won't come off the 15-day disabled list until he's able to pitch on back-to-back days.

7/15/2005

According to Diamondbacks manager Bob Melvin, Lyon is not going to resume closing immediately when he is activated from the 15-day disabled list, as the team will ease him back into the role. The righthander has been sidelined since mid-May with tendinitis in his pitching elbow, but has been progressing on schedule in his rehab program. Brian Bruney will continue to be called upon in most save situations for the time being.

7/6/2005

Lyon, who has been sidelined since mid-May with tendinitis in his pitching elbow, reported some minor discomfort during a bullpen session on Monday. The problem is not a huge concern to the Diamondbacks' righthander, and he plans to remain on schedule in his recovery. Prior to his stint on the disabled list, Lyon was 0-2 with a 1.96 ERA and 13 saves in 18 relief appearances this season.

7/1/2005

Lyon is scheduled to throw off the mound on Saturday, as he continues to work his way back to the Diamondbacks' bullpen. The righthander has been sidelined since mid-May with tendinitis in his pitching elbow, but has been pain-free for more than two weeks. Barring any setbacks, Lyon is expected begin a minor league rehab assignment around the time of the All-Star break.

6/29/2005

Lyon continues to expand the distance from which he throws, and if all goes well over the next couple of days, he should be cleared to begin making tosses off the mound. The Diamondbacks' righthander has been sidelined since mid-May with tendinitis in his pitching elbow, but has been pain-free for more than two weeks. Prior to his stint on the disabled list, Lyon was 0-2 with a 1.96 ERA and 13 saves in 18 relief appearances this season.

6/14/2005

Lyon, who hasn't thrown since May 24 because of an inflamed right elbow, began playing catch Monday. The 25-year-old righthander threw from about 60 feet for six minutes with assistant athletic trainer Dave Edwards before Monday's game and reported no pain in his pitching arm.

6/13/2005

As part of their player moves over the weekend, the Arizona Diamondbacks moved Lyon to the 60-day disabled list to make room on their 40-man roster. The D-Backs' closer, who has been out of action since May 12, has been resting an inflamed right elbow and hasn't done any throwing since going on the DL.

5/26/2005

Despite showing some progress over the weekend, Lyon will not be allowed to throw for the next 10 days after an MRI on his ailing pitching elbow revealed some changes to the ulnar collateral ligament. The Diamondbacks' closer, who has been sidelined for more than two weeks, will seek another opinion to determine his best course of action. The team currently does not have a timetable for his return.

5/23/2005

According to Diamondbacks manager Bob Melvin, Lyon had no major problems after throwing prior to Sunday's game against the Detroit Tigers. The closer, who currently is on the 15-day disabled list with tendinitis in his pitching elbow, will expand his workouts over the next several days, barring any setbacks. There is a chance he could be back in the bullpen as early as this weekend. Brian Bruney will continue to handle the team's save situations for the time being.

5/19/2005

The Arizona Diamondbacks had planned to get Lyon back on Wednesday after holding him out for nearly a week, due to tendinitis in his pitching elbow. Instead, the team decided to place the righthander on the 15-day disabled list and allow him to rest the arm. The ailment is considered minor, and the move is purely precautionary. He should be back within a couple of weeks. Filling the void on the roster will be infielder Matt Kata, recalled from Triple-A Tucson.

5/18/2005

Diamondbacks manager Bob Melvin decided not to use Lyon over the weekend after the righthander pitched in three straight games late last week and developed some minor minor tendinitis in his pitching elbow as a result. The closer will be available for Wednesday's meeting with the Houston Astros, if needed.

5/12/2005

Lyon needed just six pitches to retire the side in the ninth inning of Wednesday's 3-2 victory over the Washington Nationals, notching his major league-leading 13th save of the 2005 campaign. The Diamondbacks' closer has given up 19 hits in 17.1 innings of work this season, but allowed just three earned runs to score.

For the year, the 25-year-old Lyon is 0-2 with a 1.56 ERA in 17 relief appearances. He has struck out 11 batters and walked just three.

4/21/2005

Lyon, who was handed the Diamondbacks' closer job after Greg Aquino was slowed by elbow problems in spring training, has prospered in the role so far this season. In eight appearances, the 25-year-old righthander is 0-1 with a 1.04 ERA and six saves. He's struck out seven batters and walked just one in 8.2 innings.

Lyon has a firm grasp on the job and is not expected to lose it, even when Aquino returns to the Arizona bullpen.

4/4/2005

After allowing just one run on four hits and recording two saves in 13 innings this spring, Lyon will begin the regular season as the Arizona Diamondbacks' primary closer. The righthander struck out 13 batters and walked none in his exhibition action.

Greg Aquino was slated to claim the closer role, but he was slowed by elbow problems this spring, opening the door for Lyon. For his career, Lyon is 10-14 with nine saves and a 4.99 ERA in 75 big league games with Toronto and Boston. He missed most of last season while recovering from elbow surgery.
