Henry Mateo

7/13/2005

To make room for Mike Stanton on the 40-man roster, the Washington Nationals move Mateo from the 15-day to the 60-day disabled list on Wednesday. The 28-year-old infielder, who is 0-for-1 with a walk for the Nationals this season, has been out nearly all year with shoulder tendinitis. The discomfort has been a problem following surgery to repair a torn labrum last September.

Just six days after being activated from the disabled list, utilityman Henry Mateo has been placed back on the 15-day DL with a right shoulder injury. According to the Nationals' trainers, Mateo developed tendinitis in his shoulder in spring training, and it's been bothering him since.

Mateo could have picked up some starts for an injured Jose Vidro, but now that he's going back on the DL, Jamey Carroll should see all of the starts at second base.

Mateo has been activated from the 15-day disabled list by the Washington Nationals and will be available for Monday night's game against the Arizona Diamondbacks. The infielder, who had been sidelined all season with tendinitis in his right shoulder, will split time with Jamey Carroll at second base until normal starter Jose Vidro is able to return from a sprained left ankle.

Making room on the roster for Mateo, the Nationals optioned outfielder J.J. Davis to Triple-A New Orleans. In 40 major league games last season (44 at-bats), Mateo batted .273 with two doubles and two stolen bases.
