Tim Redding

7/17/2005

Redding has been designated for assignment by the New York Yankees, opening a spot on the roster for veteran Al Leiter, who was acquired from the Florida Marlins on Saturday. Redding, picked up in a trade with the San Diego Padres earlier this month, made just one start for the Yanks, allowing six runs on four hits and four walks in just one inning of work.

Redding, who was acquired from San Diego at the start of July, has been recalled from Triple-A Columbus after Yankees righthander Wang Chien-Ming went on the 15-day disabled list with shoulder inflammation Thursday.

Redding has reportedly been traded along with Darrell May and cash to the New York Yankees in exchange for reliever Paul Quantrill. Redding is 0-5 with a 8.94 ERA in six starts with the Padres this season. He and May are expected to report to the Yankees' Triple-A affiliate.

Redding has been traded, along with Darrell May and cash, to the New York Yankees, in exchange for reliever Paul Quantrill. Redding was 0-5 with an 8.94 ERA in six starts for the Padres this season. He and May are expected to report to the Yankees' Triple-A affiliate.

Redding has been activated from the 15-day disabled list by the San Diego Padres after missing nearly six weeks with a strained pitching shoulder. The righthander, who takes the roster spot of ailing hurler Adam Eaton, appeared in seven games prior to his stint on the DL, including six starts, going 0-5 with an 8.76 ERA.

The Padres have yet to find out the severity of Redding's arm injury, but the team has placed him on the 15-day disabled list, as he is expected to be sidelined for at least a couple weeks. The righthander originally was diagnosed with a strained pitching shoulder after leaving Sunday's loss to the St. Louis Cardinals, when he allowed five hits, three walks and eight earned runs in just two-thirds of an inning.

With Redding sidelined, the Padres have recalled Tim Stauffer from Triple-A Portland and will ask him to fill the void in the starting rotation. In seven appearances this season, including six starts, Redding is 0-5 with an 8.76 ERA. Even if he is able to recover quickly, Redding won't be guaranteed a starting spot upon his return.

Redding left his start on Sunday against the Cardinals in the first inning after doubling over in pain with an apparent shoulder injury. Redding allowed five hits, three walks and eight earned runs in just two-thirds of an inning before leaving the game. The righthander is expected to return to San Diego to undergo further tests. His ERA has ballooned to 8.76 on the season.
