Jason Smith

7/5/2005

To make room for Justin Verlander, Detroit's starter in Game 2 of Monday's doubleheader with Cleveland, the Tigers designated Smith for assignment. It marked the second time the 27-year-old veteran was designated for assignment by Detroit in the last three weeks. In 27 games with the Tigers, Smith was 11-for-58 (.190) with two triples and two RBI.

Roughly two weeks after being designated for assignment, Smith was promoted again by the Detroit Tigers on Tuesday. The 27-year-old infielder was recalled when Carlos Guillen was forced onto the 15-day disabled list with a hamstring injury.

The Detroit Tigers designated Smith for assignment on Wednesday and recalled top infield prospect Tony Giarratano to take Smith's place on the roster. Smith had hit .200 (9-for-45) with two runs scored and an RBI in 21 games for Detroit.
