Scot Shields

1/18/2006

The Angels agreed to a one-year, $2.1 million deal with Shields on Tuesday, avoiding salary arbitration. Shields went 10-11 with a 2.75 ERA and seven saves in 2005. The setup man appeared in a club-record 78 games.

Angels closer Francisco Rodriguez will be out for most of another week after he was placed on the 15-day disabled list Monday, retroactive to May 15. Look for Shields to continue getting most of the save chances while Rodriguez is out. Shields has been a perfect 3-for-3 in saves as K-Rod's replacement, and the 29-year-old righthander hasn't given up a run in his last six games and 7.2 innings. Over that stretch, he's allowed just two hits and two walks while fanning 10.

With Angels closer Francisco Rodriguez on the shelf for at least a few days with a mild forearm strain, Shields and Brendan Donnelly will get the call in the ninth inning. Shields did the honors on Monday, working a 1-2-3 ninth inning that included two strikeouts to preserve a 3-1 Angels win over Cleveland.

Shields earned his third save and dropped his ERA over 21.2 innings to 1.25. He has struck out 28. Rodriguez, Shields and Donnelly have been the core of an Angels bullpen that has stranded 35 of 38 inherited runners, a league-best mark.
