Brian Lawrence

3/27/2006

The Washington Nationals placed Lawrence on the 15-day disabled list Monday. The right-hander has been sidelined for a month, diagnosed with a torn labrum in his throwing shoulder after his first bullpen session of the spring. He underwent surgery and could be out for the season.

The Washington Post is reporting that Lawrence's season may be over. The Nationals' right-hander had surgery on Sunday, which determined that he had a torn rotator cuff in addition to the torn right labrum that led to the procedure. A team spokesman told the Post that Lawrence could begin throwing in 12 weeks and will be out 4-8 months.

Lawrence is expected to be out at least until the All-Star break with a torn right labrum. The Nationals' right-hander, acquired in a trade with San Diego in the offseason, had an MRI Saturday that confirmed the injury.

Looking for more power from their corner infielders, the San Diego Padres traded Lawrence and cash to the Washington Nationals for third baseman Vinny Castilla on Thursday. In 33 starts last season, Lawrence was 7-15 with a 4.83 ERA for the Padres.

After lasting just 2.1 innings in his last outing, Lawrence bounced back on Saturday, tossing a gem in a 2-0 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Padres' righthander allowed just two hits in eight scoreless innings, striking out seven and walking two.

Lawrence has been quite inconsistent so far this season, going seven or more innings in three outings, but failing to get out of the third inning in his other two starts. He has a 1.57 ERA at home and a 23.40 ERA on the road. Overall, Lawrence is 2-3 with a 5.46 ERA.
