Jason Michaels

7/5/2006

Michaels was activated from the 15-day disabled list on Tuesday after being sidelined since June 24 with a sprained right ankle. The 30-year-old left fielder went 1-for-4 in his first game back as the Indians routed the New York Yankees 19-1.

The Indians placed Michaels on the 15-day disabled list with a sprained right ankle Saturday and purchased the contract of left-hander Jeremy Sowers from Triple-A Buffalo. The move on Michaels was made retroactive to June 16. He was hurt in the seventh inning the previous day when he ran into the left-field wall at Yankee Stadium while trying to catch a home run hit by New York's Bernie Williams.

Michaels missed his fourth straight game on Tuesday with an ankle injury he suffered trying to make a catch at Yankee Stadium. Cleveland is holding out hope he won't have to go on the disabled list, but if the injury doesn't continue to improve, he might end up there.

Michaels agreed to a one-year, $1.5 million deal with the Phillies on Monday. Expected to be the team's fourth outfielder, Michaels batted .304 with four homers and 31 RBIs last season. He scored a career-high 54 runs.

Michaels spent about nine hours in jail after being arrested early Sunday for allegedly punching a uniformed police officer, wrestling him to the ground and ripping his shirt outside a Philadelphia nightclub. The Phillies' outfielder has been charged with aggravated assault on a police officer, simple assault and reckless endangerment. He's scheduled to appear in court on Thursday.
