Craig Wilson

7/31/2006

Trying to fill gaps, the New York Yankees got infielder/outfielder Craig Wilson from the Pittsburgh Pirates for pitcher Shawn Chacon on Tuesday.

Since Pirates first baseman Sean Casey went down with two fractures in his lower back Friday, Wilson has manned first base and hit well in place of Casey. In the weekend's three-game set with the Chicago Cubs, Wilson was 3-for-9 with a triple, two homers and five RBIs. He also stole a base and drew two walks.

Avoiding arbitration, Wilson signed a one-year, $3.3 million deal with the Pittsburgh Pirates Saturday. The 29-year-old veteran missed 103 games last season because of two injuries to his left hand. In 59 games, he batted .264 with 14 doubles, five homers, 22 RBIs and a .387 on-base percentage.

The Pittsburgh Pirates activated Wilson from the disabled list Sunday, six weeks after breaking the pinkie finger on his left hand. His return marks the end of his second lengthy stay on the DL, as the utilityman missed more than two months early in the year, following surgery to repair torn tissue under the knuckle of the middle finger on the same hand.

Wilson has been taking batting practice and fielding grounders over the past couple of days, as he continues to recover from a broken pinkie finger on his left hand. The Pirates plan to bring the utilityman along slowly, and he likely won't be activated from the 15-day disabled list until rosters expand on September 1, according to manager Lloyd McClendon.

Wilson's broken left pinkie finger continues to heal on schedule, but according to Pirates manager Lloyd McClendon, the outfielder/first baseman likely won't be back in the lineup until at least early September. It's been a rough season for Wilson, who missed more than two months earlier this year while recovering from surgery to repair torn tissue under the knuckle of middle finger on the same hand.

Tests have revealed that Wilson has a broken pinkie finger on his left hand, the result of being plunked by a Greg Maddux pitch in Saturday's game against the Chicago Cubs. The outfielder/first baseman recently returned to the Pirates' active roster after missing more than two months while recovering from surgery to repair torn tissue under the knuckle of middle finger on the same hand. He will be placed back on the 15-day disabled list on Sunday.

7/16/2005

Wilson left Saturday's game with a contusion on his left hand after being hit by a pitch in the first inning by Cubs starter Greg Maddux. Jason Bay moved over to left field from center to replace Wilson, with Tike Redman coming into the contest to ply CF.

7/9/2005

The Pirates activated Wilson from the disabled list Saturday. Wilson has been on the DL since May 8 with and injured finger on his left hand. Prior to going on the DL, Wilson was batting .296 with one home run and seven RBI through 26 games.

Wilson is nearing a return to the Pirates' lineup, as he is scheduled to begin a minor league rehab assignment at Triple-A Indianapolis on Monday. The outfielder/first baseman has been sidelined since undergoing surgery in mid-May to repair torn tissue under the knuckle of middle finger on his left hand.

Wilson has been sidelined since undergoing surgery in mid-May to repair torn tissue under the knuckle of middle finger on his left hand. However, the Pirates' first baseman/outfielder has been throwing for three weeks and resumed swinging a bat several days ago. If he continues to progress on scheduled, a minor league rehab assignment should be in his near future.

6/2/2005

Wilson has resumed throwing, but has yet to swing a bat, as he recovers from surgery on the middle finger of his left hand. The Pirates' first baseman/outfielder, who has been sidelined since tearing tissue from his knuckle nearly a month ago, is still 3-4 weeks away from returning to the lineup.

5/10/2005

Wilson, who tore tissue from the knuckle of his left middle finger while batting in last Friday's game against the Arizona Diamondbacks, is scheduled to undergo surgery on Tuesday. Although a definite timetable likely won't be known until after the procedure, the Pirates expect the first baseman/outfielder to be sidelined for about two months. He will remain on the 15-day disabled list during that time.

Daryle Ward should see the majority of the time at first base during Wilson's absence, while Rob Mackowiak, Ray Sadler and Tike Redman are expected to get more action in the outfield. In 26 games this season, Wilson is batting .296 with one home run, seven RBI and two stolen bases.

5/8/2005

The Pirates placed Wilson on the 15-day disabled list on Sunday due to torn tissue in the knuckle of his left middle finger. The first baseman/outfielder suffered the injury on Friday while swinging the bat in his second plate appearance of the game against the Diamondbacks. After breaking out for 29 homers in 2004, Wilson has just one longball in 81 at-bats this season.

The injury comes at a bad time for Wilson, who is hitting .563 (9-for-16) in his last five games. The Pirates purchased the contract of Ray Sadler from Double-A Altoona to replace Wilson on the roster.

5/4/2005

Going into this week's three-game series with the Houston Astros, Wilson had been in a bit of a slump, notching just three hits in his last 21 at-bats. But the Pirates' first baseman/outfielder appears to be back on track, going 6-for-7 with two doubles, a home run and two RBI in the first two contests of the series.

With his production the last two nights, Wilson boosted his season batting average from .231 to .292. He only has one homer this year after belting 29 in 2004.
