Brad Wilkerson

5/5/2006

Wilkerson left Thursday night's game against Baltimore with a mild concussion after catching a flyball and then crashing hard into the wall. The Texas outfielder is bothered by a dull headache and a sore right shoulder. The shoulder was an issue last season with Washington.

Wilkerson will be examined by the Rangers' doctors and undergo an MRI exam on Sunday due to pain in his right shoulder. He was bothered by this injury during the 2005 season with the Washington Nationals.

Wilkerson agreed to a $3.9 million, one-year deal with Texas on Tuesday, avoiding salary arbitration. Wilkerson was acquired from Washington on Dec. 9 as part of the Alfonso Soriano deal.

The Washington Nationals traded Wilkerson to the Texas Rangers along with outfielder Terrmel Sledge in exchange for All-Star second baseman Alfonso Soriano on Wednesday. Wilkerson hit .248 with 11 home runs and 57 RBIs in 148 games for the Nationals in 2005.

After missing a couple days with a minor sinus problem, Wilkerson was back in the Nationals' lineup for Thursday's meeting with the Cincinnati Reds. The outfielder, who batted leadoff, went 1-for-4 with a walk and a two-run homer in his return.

A minor sinus problem kept Wilkerson out of the Washington Nationals' lineup on Tuesday and currently has him listed as day-to-day. The outfielder, who is batting .246 with eight home runs, 44 RBI and five stolen bases in 116 games this season, was replaced by Ryan Church.

Although he recorded just one hit and a walk in his five plate appearances, Wilkerson belted a grand slam to lead the Nationals to a 7-0 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Thursday. Prior to the longball, Washington was the only club in the major leagues without a grand slam this season.

Wilkerson was back in the Washington Nationals' starting lineup for Tuesday's meeting with the Oakland A's, going 1-for-4 with a pair of strikeouts. The outfielder/first baseman had not seen an at bat since last Thursday, due to a sore right hand. He hopes to avoid missing any more time going forward.

Wilkerson has been absent from the Washington Nationals' lineup the last two games, due to a sore right hand. Bothered by a right forearm problem for more than a month as well, the outfielder currently is listed as day-to-day. Wilkerson came in as a defensive replacement late in Saturday's meeting with the Florida Marlins, but did not record an at-bat. He should return to regular duties within the next couple of days.

Further testing on Wilkerson's ailing right forearm has revealed an irritated nerve. The Nationals' outfielder, who has been bothered by the injury for more than three weeks, will be evaluated on a daily basis to determine his availability, and a trip to the disabled list is not expected at this time. For the season, he is batting .281 with three home runs, 17 RBI and three stolen bases.

Wilkerson has been bothered by a strained muscle in his right forearm since early in May, and he sat out Washington's game against Toronto on Sunday. The Nationals fear their leadoff hitter will be out for an extended period of time. He is scheduled to undergo a bone scan while the club is in Cincinnati to begin a three-game series versus the Reds on Monday.

The primary reason for Wilkerson's struggles of late -- especially in the power categories -- is a strained muscle in his right forearm, an injury he's been battling for a couple of weeks. Over his last 12 games, the Nationals' outfielder is 9-for-49 (.184) with no home runs and 18 strikeouts. He plans to play through the injury.

Despite the recent slump, Wilkerson's season totals are still fairly impressive. He is batting .296 with 13 doubles, three home runs, 17 RBI, three stolen bases and 18 runs scored in 33 games.

4/25/2005

Wilkerson extended his current hitting streak to five games in a big way on Sunday, going 4-for-5 with a home run, stolen base, two RBI and three runs scored in a win over the New York Mets. The Nationals' outfielder, who hit for the cycle earlier this month, has recorded a double in each of his last four contests.

In 19 games this season, Wilkerson is batting .346 with eight doubles, two triples, eight RBI and two stolen bases. However, he has struck out 21 times in 78 at-bats as well.

In Wednesday's game against the Philadelphia Phillies, Wilkerson hit for the cycle for the second time in his major league career. The outfielder/first baseman homered in the third inning, singled in the fifth, tripled in the seventh and capped off the night with a ground-rule double in the eighth. He also drew a walk and finished with two RBI. The cycle was the seventh in franchise history, but first since the team moved to Washington during the offseason.

With Endy Chavez' demotion, Wilkerson is back in the leadoff role for the Nationals this season. In 160 games last year, he batted .255 with 32 home runs, 67 RBI and 13 stolen bases in 160 games.
