Hee-Seop Choi

4/14/2006

Choi was sent by the Red Sox to Triple-A Pawtucket for a rehabilitation assignment on Friday. The first baseman, who was claimed off waivers from the Los Angeles Dodgers on March 24, was placed on the 15-day disabled list on April 1, retroactive to March 29, with a strained left hamstring.

The Boston Red Sox claimed Choi off waivers from the Los Angeles Dodgers Friday. The first baseman gives the Red Sox a third option at first behind Kevin Youkilis and J.T. Snow.

Choi connected on a longball again on Tuesday, homering for a fourth straight game in the Los Angeles Dodgers' 3-2 loss to Kansas City. In his last four games, the first baseman has homered seven times in 17 at-bats. Six of his seven homers have been solo shots, and he has knocked in eight runs over that four-game span.

Choi stroked three home runs off Twins righthander Brad Radke on Sunday, delivering solo shots in his first three at-bats of the Dodgers' 4-3 win over Minnesota. Choi's final homer in the sixth inning broke a 3-3 tie.

Choi was held out of the Dodgers' lineup for Monday's meeting with the Chicago Cubs, due to stiffness in his left forearm. The injury is considered minor, and the first baseman was used as a pinch-hitter late in the contest. He should return to regular action within the next day or two.

After struggling at the plate to begin the 2005 campaign, it appears Choi has found his stroke. Despite striking out twice, the Dodgers' first baseman went 2-for-4 with a home run, walk and four RBI in Tuesday's win over the St. Louis Cardinals. Over the last couple of weeks, he is 14-for-37 (.378) with three doubles, five home runs and 13 RBI in 12 games.

Choi's playing time has been sporadic for most of the season, but if he can continue his hot hitting, he will remain in the lineup on a daily basis. Choi's hardships against lefthanded pitching have carried over to this year as well, as he's batting just .143 facing southpaws (.293 against righthanders).
