Carlos Pena

3/26/2006

Pena was released by the Tigers on Sunday, after hitting .160 with one home run during spring training.

Pena agreed to a one-year contract with Detroit on Tuesday, avoiding salary arbitration. The first baseman hit .235 with 18 home runs and 44 RBIs in 79 games last season. He split time between the Tigers and Triple-A Toledo.

For the second time since being recalled on August 19, Pena had two home runs in a game. He went deep in the fourth and sixth innings and knocked in all four runs in the Tigers' 4-1 win over Oakland.

In his first game since being recalled from the minors, Pena went 3-4 with two solo home runs against the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday. Pena was a late add to the Detroit lineup on Friday when Magglio Ordonez was scratched because of the flu.

On Tuesday, the Detroit Tigers placed Carlos Guillen on the 15-day disabled list and recalled Pena to fill the roster spot. Pena started the season with the Tigers, but was demoted to Triple-A Toledo at the end of May with a .181 average and .283 slugging mark. The 27-year-old first baseman produced just seven extra-base hits in 41 games. At Toledo, he hit .311 with 17 doubles, 12 homers, 45 RBI and a .525 slugging mark in 71 games.

Pena hasn't been able to escape a season-long funk, and on Tuesday, the Detroit Tigers sent the first baseman to Triple-A Toledo to try to regain his stroke. The 27-year-old Pena was batting .181 with three homers and 14 RBI in 41 games for the Tigers this season.
