Ben Sheets

7/25/2006

Sheets was activated from the disabled list after Monday night's game and will start Tuesday night against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

7/5/2006

Sheets threw three 15-pitch sessions from the mound before Tuesday's game. "That was the plan today, for him to go out and throw 45 pitches," Brewers manager Ned Yost said. "He's starting to develop, and it's the first time I've seen it today, a cutter to go along with his curveball, and it looked pretty good." Sheets has been on the 15-day disabled list since May 3 with tendinitis in his right shoulder.

5/22/2006

Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Ben Sheets had an MRI on Monday that showed his ailing right shoulder is structurally sound. Sheets is expected to rejoin the team Tuesday in Cincinnati, but the team doesn't have a timetable for his return. While he has played catch three times since going on the disabled list, he hasn't thrown from a mound.

5/10/2006

The Milwaukee Brewers placed Sheets on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday after missing his Sunday start against the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Brewers' ace is suffering from right shoulder tendinitis. He was expected to delay his next start until Thursday, then Saturday, but the Brewers decided to place him on the DL after a throwing session was cut short on Tuesday.

5/8/2006

Sheets missed his scheduled start against the Dodgers Sunday with stiffness in the front of his shoulder. Milwaukee manager Ned Yost said this ailment is not related to the muscle tear in the shoulder that ended his 2005 season in late August, but the Brewers will be cautious with their ace. He started the year on the DL to complete rehab for last season's injury.

4/16/2006

After being activated from the 15-day disabled list, Sheets allowed four earned runs and six hits in five innings in his first start of the season, a 9-3 Brewers loss to the New York Mets on Sunday. Sheets, 27, had been on the DL since March 30 with a right shoulder strain.

4/7/2006

Sheets worked 2 2-3 innings in his rehabilitation start for Double-A Huntsville Thursday night. The Milwaukee right-hander showed good velocity, reaching the mid-90s on the radar gun and striking out five. Sheets had a 50-pitch limit and threw 37 of 49 pitches for strikes. Rehabbing a strained muscle in his upper back, he allowed two runs -- one earned -- and four hits against the Mississippi Braves.

4/4/2006

Sheets, who strained a muscle in his upper back in a spring training game March 9, will make a rehab start Thursday for Double-A Huntsville. The Brewers' ace is expected to throw 50 pitches. He went on the disabled list March 30, retroactive to March 24. He is eligible to come off the DL on April 8.

3/30/2006

Sheets, the ace of the Milwaukee staff, will begin the new season on the 15-day disabled list. The Brewers made the move Thursday, retroactive to March 24, so the right-hander will be eligible to return on April 8.

3/29/2006

Sheets said he felt "great" after throwing roughly 60 pitches in a simulated game Tuesday. The Brewers' staff ace is rehabbing an upper back muscle he strained March 9, a different back muscle than the one he tore late in 2005. The 27-year-old right-hander missed the last month of last season with the injury.

3/17/2006

Sheets threw a bullpen session Thursday, a little less than a week after straining a back muscle. The Brewers' ace made it through the throwing session without any problems, and he'll take a couple days off before throwing again. If Sheets continues the rehab process without a setback, he still could pitch on opening day for Milwaukee.

3/11/2006

Sheets' status for Opening Day became questionable when he was diagnosed Saturday with a straight muscle alongside the muscle he tore last August. Sheets now has a strained teres major muscle in the back of his shoulder. The Brewers will learn of Sheets' status in about a week.

3/9/2006

Sheets left Milwaukee's exhibition game against Oakland Thursday with irritation in a muscle in his right side. The irritation is in the same area that led to a season-ending injury in late August last season. The right-hander will see the team doctor Saturday after leaving Thursday's game in the first inning. He allowed six of the seven batters he faced to reach before pitching coach Mike Maddux came out and Sheets left.

8/27/2005

With two outs in the top of the eighth inning Friday night, and Ben Sheets rolling along with a 3-0 lead over the Braves, the pitcher suffered a strained muscle on the right side of his back, and was forced to leave his potential shutout. Sheets, who has allowed more than three runs just once over his last 12 starts, will be reevaluated on Saturday, and is listed as day-to-day.

8/21/2005

Coming off the worst start of his major league career, Sheets got back on track in Saturday's victory over the Houston Astros, going the distance to record his third complete game of the season. The Brewers' righthander, who gave up 10 runs in his last outing, allowed just two runs on eight hits, struck out eight and did not walk a batter.

8/16/2005

After holding opposing teams to three or fewer runs in each of his previous nine outings, Sheets proved he is human in Monday's loss to the Colorado Rockies. In the worst start of his major league career, the Brewers' righthander allowed 10 runs on a career-high 13 hits in six innings of work. He struck out seven and did not walk a batter.

8/10/2005

Sheets notched his second complete game of the 2005 campaign, going the distance in Wednesday's 3-0 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals. Although he was unable to record the win, the Brewers' righthander tossed a solid game, allowing three runs -- two earned -- on five hits. He struck out nine and did not walk a batter.

7/5/2005

Sheets turned in his first double-digit strikeout performance of the 2005 campaign, fanning 10 batters in Monday's 3-2 victory over the Florida Marlins. The Brewers' righthander allowed two runs on four hits and one walk in eight innings of work to notch his fourth win of the season.

6/8/2005

Sheets notched his first win since the Brewers' 2005 regular-season opener, tossing seven solid innings in Tuesday's 2-1 victory over the New York Yankees. The righthander, who missed more than a month with an inflamed nerve in his inner ear, struggled with his control at times, walking five batters. However, he allowed just two hits, struck out five and failed to surrender a run.

6/3/2005

Sheets dropped his fifth consecutive start on Thursday, allowing five runs on six hits -- including three home runs -- over five innings of work in a 6-4 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Brewers' ace, who missed more than a month with an inflamed nerve in his inner ear, has posted a 1-5 record and 4.34 ERA in six outings this season. He has 39 strikeouts and just seven walks in 37.1 innings.

5/29/2005

Sheets returned to action Saturday, taking the mound against the Houston Astros, who proved to be less than accommodating guests at Miller Park. With the help of a Junior Spivey error, the Astros scored four times in the first, pinning the loss on Sheets.

5/24/2005

Barring any setbacks, Sheets continues to be on pace to take the mound against the Houston Astros this weekend. The Brewers' righthander, who has been sidelined for more than a month with an inflamed nerve in his inner ear, reported no major problems after throwing 75 pitches in an extended spring training game on Monday. He allowed four runs -- two earned -- on four hits and two walks, striking out five in four-plus innings.

5/18/2005

If Sheets continues to improve over the next several days, he could be activated from the disabled list in time to take the mound against the Houston Astros next weekend. The Brewers' righthander, who has missed nearly a month with an inflamed nerve in his inner ear, had been penciled in to start during a three-game series with the Minnesota Twins May 20-22, but was scratched after reporting problems during fielding drills last Friday.

5/16/2005

Sheets reported feeling dizzy while doing some fielding drills over the weekend, a possible setback in his return to the Milwaukee Brewers' starting rotation. The righthander, who has missed nearly a month with an inflamed nerve in his inner ear, had been penciled in to start during a three-game series with the Minnesota Twins May 20-22, but he likely won't be back for at least another week after that.

The Brewers plan to bring Sheets along slowly and will not activate him until he is fully recovered. Wes Obermueller will remain in the starting rotation until that time. For the year, Sheets is 1-3 with a 3.95 ERA, striking out 25 batters and walking just four in 27.1 innings.

5/14/2005

Although Sheets threw a bullpen session on Friday, a timetable for his return from the disabled list remains uncertain. Sidelined with an inner ear infection, Sheets can throw without a problem but is still getting dizzy when he turns his head rapidly to the left. The Brewers will not send him out on a rehabilitation assignment until the pitcher is symptom-free, making his scheduled return on May 22 doubtful.

5/12/2005

Sheets has been able to expand his workouts recently, as he continues to recover from an inflamed nerve in his inner ear. The Brewers' ace reported some minor dizziness, but no major problems after throwing about 65 pitches in batting practice and doing some fielding drills on Wednesday. If he remains on schedule, Sheets will have a bullpen session on Friday, then toss a simulated game early next week.

According to Milwaukee manager Ned Yost, the team is hopeful that Sheets will be able to take the mound during a series against the Minnesota Twins May 20-22. Wes Obermueller will remain in the starting rotation until that time. For the year, Sheets is 1-3 with a 3.95 ERA, striking out 25 batters and walking just four in 27.1 innings.

5/4/2005

Sheets has been playing catch over the past few days, but he is still experiencing minor dizziness when he swivels his head or changes his eye level. As a result, the righthander is not expected to be ready for Saturday's game against the New York Mets, as the Brewers had hoped. Sheets has been sidelined for nearly two weeks with an inflamed nerve in his inner ear, the same ailment that forced him to miss a start last season. He'll likely miss at least another week.

Wes Obermueller will remain in the starting rotation until Sheets is ready to go. For the year, Sheets is 1-3 with a 3.95 ERA, striking out 25 batters and walking just four in 27.1 innings. In his three losses, Sheets has received no support from the Brewers' offense, as the team has scored just one run combined -- they posted nine runs in his Opening Day victory over the Pirates.

5/2/2005

Sheets has been placed on the 15-day disabled list by the Milwaukee Brewers, retroactive to April 21. The righthander has been sidelined for nearly two weeks with an inflamed nerve in his inner ear, the same ailment that forced him to miss a start last season. The team currently does not have a timetable for his return. For the year, Sheets is 1-3 with a 3.95 ERA, striking out 25 batters and walking just four in 27.1 innings.

Sheets is eligible to be activated later this week, but he continues to battle dizziness, so it doesn't appear that he will be ready to go at that time. Wes Obermueller will fill the void in the Brewers' starting rotation until Sheets is back on the mound. In his three losses, Sheets has received no support from the Brewers' offense, as the team has scored just one run combined -- they posted nine runs in his Opening Day victory over the Pirates.

4/29/2005

According to manager Ned Yost, Sheets will be re-evaluated by the Brewers' medical staff in Milwaukee over the next couple of days to determine if a trip to the 15-day disabled list is necessary. The righthander has been sidelined since the middle of last week with an inflamed nerve in his inner ear, the same ailment that forced him to miss a start last season. The team currently does not have a timetable for his return.

Wes Obermueller has been called upon to fill the void in the Brewers' starting rotation until Sheets is back on the mound. In his three losses, Sheets has received no support from the Brewers' offense, as the team has scored just one run combined -- they posted nine runs in his Opening Day victory over the Pirates. For the year, Sheets is 1-3 with a 3.95 ERA, striking out 25 batters and walking just four in 27.1 innings.

4/25/2005

On Thursday, Sheets complained of dizziness and nausea, and he was admitted to a hospital, where he stayed until Saturday. Diagnosed with an inflamed nerve in his inner ear, Sheets will not take the mound against the Cardinals on Monday, as had been scheduled. Wes Obermueller is slated to start in Sheets' absence, and a timetable for his return to the rotation has not been set.

Reportedly, Sheets no longer is bothered by nausea, but he continues to have a few problems with dizziness, especially when he stands up. The same ailment forced him to miss one start last season. Don't expect him back on the mound until at least next week.

4/22/2005

There is a chance Sheets could miss his next start, scheduled for Monday against the St. Louis Cardinals. On Thursday, the Brewers' righthander complained of dizziness and nausea, and he was admitted to a hospital for observation. After undergoing several tests, Sheets has been diagnosed with an inflamed nerve in his inner ear, the same ailment that forced him to miss an outing last season. For now, he has been listed as day-to-day.

Sheets struggled with the flu in his last start and took the loss -- his third straight -- allowing four earned runs on nine hits and finishing with seven strikeouts and one walk in six innings of work. Sheets, who spent the night in the hospital as a precautionary measure, will be re-evaluated over the next couple of days to determine his availability.

4/21/2005

Despite battling the flu, Sheets took the mound for the Milwaukee Brewers in Wednesday's game against the Houston Astros. The righthander probably was reconsidering his decision after allowing back-to-back home runs to Adam Everett and Craig Biggio in the first inning. He took the loss -- his third straight -- allowing four earned runs on nine hits and finishing with seven strikeouts and one walk in six innings of work.

4/20/2005

Sheets currently is battling the flu, and there is a chance that he might not be ready for his scheduled start against the Houston Astros on Wednesday. The Brewers' righthander has vowed to take the mound, but manager Ned Yost is not as optimistic, saying Sheets would be a game-time decision. Wes Obermueller will get the nod if Sheets is held out.

If Sheets pitches, he'll be hoping for more offensive support than he's received so far this season. The Brewers have scored just two runs in Sheets' three starts combined. He is 1-2 with a 3.38 ERA, striking out 18 and walking three in 21.1 innings.

4/15/2005

Sheets has signed a four-year, $38.5 million contract with the Milwaukee Brewers. The deal, which replaces the one-year, $6 million contract he signed in February, is the richest in team history. Coming off offseason back surgery, the 26-year-old righthander is 1-1 with a 3.86 ERA in two starts in 2005. He's fanned 11 and walked just two in 14 innings.

Sheets is being rewarded for his career season in 2004, when he went 12-14 with a 2.70 ERA and five complete games in 34 starts. He finished the year with a franchise-record 264 strikeouts, ranking second in the National League behind veteran Randy Johnson. He also gave up just 32 walks in 237 innings.
