C.C. Sabathia

5/2/2006

Sabathia was activated from the disabled list early Tuesday, in time to work five innings and get his first "W" in Cleveland's 7-1 victory over the Chicago White Sox. The Indians' left-hander, who suffered a strained oblique muscle on opening day, allowed one run over five frames to stop Chicago's four-game winning streak. The White Sox had won eight straight at Jacobs Field before Tuesday.

Sabathia threw 75 pitches in a rehabilitation start at Triple-A Buffalo on Thursday. The Cleveland left-hander, rehabbing an abdominal muscle he strained on opening day, allowed six hits and one earned run in five innings. He walked one and struck out five.

Sabathia did some light throwing Sunday for the first time since leaving the Indians' opener with a strained abdominal muscle. The Cleveland left-hander, who is on the disabled list, reported no pain but does not have a timetable for his return. The injury is similar to the one he suffered in spring training a year ago, forcing him to miss six weeks of the 2005 season.

Sabathia is expected to miss three to five weeks with a strained right oblique muscle. The Cleveland left-hander left Monday's opener in the third inning, and he has landed on the 15-day disabled list. The injury is similar to the one he suffered in spring training a year ago, forcing him to miss six weeks of the 2005 season. "It's not as bad as it was last year," Sabathia said before Tuesday's game against the White Sox.

Sabathia, the 25-year-old ace of the Cleveland staff, left Monday's season opener with a strained right abdominal muscle in the third inning. The left-hander was injured on his follow-through of a pitch to Chicago's Tadahito Iguchi in the White Sox's 10-4 victory. He will be examined Monday in Chicago.

On Wednesday, Sabathia and the Cleveland Indians agreed to a two-year, $17.75 million contract extention that will keep the All-Star lefthander with the club through 2008. The extension begins with Cleveland picking up the $7 million option on the southpaw's contract for 2006. Then he will make $8.75 million in 2007 and $9 million in 2008.

While the deal only guarantees $17.75 million for 2007 and 2008, Sabathia's salary can increase to $9 million in 2006 if he reaches performance incentives and finishes among the top two in Cy Young voting or in the top five for MVP. He can make a maximum of $11.75 million in 2007 and 2008 with similar bonuses.

Cleveland activated Sabathia from the 15-day disabled list on Saturday. The pitcher has been sidelined by an oblique injury suffered on March 6.

Sabathia is expected to make his season debut Sunday against the Minnesota Twins.

As anticipated, Sabathia has been penciled in to face Minnesota on Sunday. The Indians' lefthander will square off against Joe Mays in his 2005 debut, which has been delayed by an oblique injury suffered in spring training. The 6-foot-7 lefthander suffered the injury in his first spring start on March 6.

Sabathia allowed three runs -- one earned -- on two hits over four innings in a minor league rehab start with Double-A Akron on Thursday. The lefthander, who is recovering from a strained right oblique, will have one more minor league outing, and if all goes well, he is expected to return to the Cleveland Indians' rotation for a start against the Minnesota Twins on April 17.

Jason Davis will fill the void in the starting rotation until Sabathia is able to return. In 30 starts last season, Sabathia went 11-10 with a 4.12 ERA and one complete game shutout.

Sabathia, who has been rehabbing since straining a right oblique muscle in his first spring training outing on March 6, will make at least two minor league starts before joining the Indians' rotation, according to manager Eric Wedge. If all goes as planned, he will be activated in time to start against the Minnesota Twins on April 17.

Jason Davis will fill the void in the starting rotation until Sabathia is able to return. In 30 starts last season, Sabathia went 11-10 with a 4.12 ERA and one complete game shutout.
