Washington purchased Kelly's contract from Triple-A New Orleans on Friday. The outfielder has appeared in four games for Washington this season, but is yet to record an at-bat.

Kelly has cleared waivers and accepted an assignment to Triple-A New Orleans. The outfielder was designated for assignment by the Washington Nationals earlier this week to make room on the roster for first baseman Nick Johnson.

Opening a spot on the roster for first baseman Nick Johnson, the Washington Nationals have designated Kelly for assignment. The outfielder, who was claimed off waivers from the Cincinnati Reds last week, appeared in just three games during his brief stint with the Nationals, but did not record an at-bat. He went 3-for-9 with two RBI and three strikeouts in seven games with the Reds earlier this season.

The Washington Nationals have claimed Kelly off waivers from the Cincinnati Reds, replacing veteran first baseman Wil Cordero, who was designated for assignment on Wednesday. Kelly, an outfielder, has appeared in just seven major league games this season, going 3-for-9 with two RBI and two runs scored.

Tests have revealed that Kelly has a torn meniscus in his left knee, an injury suffered while making a leaping catch against the wall in Tuesday's game against the St. Louis Cardinals. The Reds' outfielder underwent surgery to repair the damage on Thursday, and he is expected to be sidelined for at least three weeks. The Reds will place him on the 15-day disabled list.

The Reds sent Austin Kearns to Triple-A Louisville on Sunday and called up Kelly to fill the vacant roster spot. Kelly's only previous big league exposure came in September 2000 with the Devil Rays. The outfielder is hitting .332 in 211 at-bats at Louisville this season.
